i think most of you don't understand this...

the "directions and connections" plan from OnStar is the highest level plan.

It gives you EVERYTHING ELSE OnStar offers too:

-Advanced Automatic crash notification...notifies an advisor if an airbag deploys or (on newer versions of onstar) if any crash is detected from sensors around the car. OnStar will ask what help you need or automatically send help to your exact location in the case that you can't respond.
-GM Goodwrench remote vehicle diagnostics and roadside assistance...no need to tell them where you are, they can find you even if you're lost
-Monthly status e-mails with such info as oil life, current mileage, possible problems, warnings if severe problems occur, and much more
-Stolen vehicle tracking
-Good samaratin emergency calling...allows you to call if you see an accident or if there is an emergency
-hands free satellite phone...comes with your own individual # and uses satelites to connect you from anywhere, especially where no phone could possibly get reception
-remote door unlock
-Turn by turn navigation...allows you to pick a specific spot or point of interest and receive turn by turn directions as you go. you can also ask your advisor about restaurants, banks, stores, and just about anything you want to find.

those who have OnStar keep renewing because they understand the value of OnStar, use it for many reasons every month, and possibly have had their lives saved because of OnStar.

an extra $300/year doesn't sound to bad to me for all this..don't forget you can also get the basic plan which is $100 less.

OnStar already includes turn-by-turn driving instructions. LeftLane News should have explained how OnStar's new service is an improvement over the old.

Lame. Especially when a Garmin or Tomtom unit would cost much less without some silly 300 fee. Just another way to make a quick buck.

I am left slightly underwhelmed...

If GM subsidized the first three years of service than I would be impressed, but an additional $300 after only one year seems kind of steep, especially when compared to many factory DVD based nav systems or aftermarket GPS systems available.

I know that the OnStar renewal rate is surprisingly high, I am just not sure about that annual cost for a nav system.
