Buick hopes to reposition itself as a Lexus competitor by beating the Japanese luxury maker at its own game: smooth riding and low cabin noise. “We are so focused on this because if a car is quieter than the competition, it is perceived to have higher quality,” Peterson said. Anita Lienert of the Detroit News got a chance to ride in Buick’s new Lucerne CX and compare it to a 2005 Lexus ES 330. “The difference was dramatic, in part because the engineers have tuned the base Lucerne CX to have a silent exhaust note, the windows are sheathed in laminated glass and the tires have a tread pattern designed to cut road noise.”The Buick engineers said they would like to take a version of their sound lab to dealerships, so consumers could hear the difference.
