Buick and Jaguar have pushed Lexus out of the top spot of J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study for the first time in 14 years. The GM and Tata-owned brands tied for first with just 122 problems per 100 vehicles, beating Lexus’ 126 problems per vehicles. The study measures dependability over the first three years of an original-owner vehicle.
“Buick has ranked among the top 10 nameplates each year since the study was last redesigned in 2003, while Jaguar has moved rapidly up the rankings,” David Sargent, VP of automotive research at
J.D. Power and Associates, said in a press release.
“ Lexus remains a very strong competitor in long-term quality. In particular, the Lexus LS 430 sets the industry standard for dependability, with fewer problems reported than any other model in the study.”
Suzuki , Volkswagen and Land Rover rounded out the bottom of the list, with 263, 260 and 238 problems per vehicle, respectively.
Aside from the top three, Toyota , Mercury, Infiniti , Acura , Lincoln , Cadillac , Honda , Porsche , Audi , Ford , Hyundai , Subaru , Chrysler and BMW all rated above the industry average of 170 problems per vehicle.
J.D. Power also ranked the top vehicle in each class; Toyota products took home ten segment awards, while Ford products received four. Buick , Mazda , Dodge and Nissan each received one award and Honda took home two. You can find charts outlining the class winners, as well as the runners-up, in the gallery.
