Buick may sell more cars in China than America

12/21/2006, 11:39 AM

By admin

As 2006 comes to a close, it appears GM’s Buick luxury division will have sold more vehicles in China than in the United States over the past year. According to Automotive News, Buick sold 206,582 vehicles in the U.S. during the first 10 months of the year — a decrease of 15.4 percent. Meanwhile, it sold 218,603 cars in China — an increase of 27.4 percent.

Of course, GM is hoping products like the new Enclave crossover will give Buick a sizable boost in America, but there’s no denying these latest figures are a sign of the times for the once-iconic American luxury brand.

Buick makes fine cars and have improved over the years as noted in several quality surveys. However, since the canned the Grand National and dropped out of racing the basically confined themselves as a senior citizen mobile! I am currently renting a Buick Lacrosse on my business trip. The only reason I have it is the rental car young women recommended it over the other choices, I had never had one before. It is a very nice vehicle, quiet, 23mpg, well appointed, etc. The young woman that recommended it is probably about 22 -25 years old. She said hey this is a great car nice to drive, I like it, but she said the only problem for her was that well it is an old folks car!! Case closed.

Coming from a family that once thrived on Buick’s, and then Cadillac’s I am glad to see that Buick is doing well—at least somewhere in the world as an appreciated marquee. Buick lost it somewhere (I’d say the mid-seventies with pollution control devices that were add-on’s versus actually resolving the problem the correct way and ferociously ugly vehicles) and lost my family as Buick owners too; I did purchase a new Riviera of the last model for sentimental reasons. I would not be surprised, in the future, if Buick is owned by a Chinese corporation.

I guess if given the choice between Buick and, say, Chery, the Buick does become the obvious choice.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Buick production left the US all together and all we got were Chinese-built Buicks in their place. It is certainly more profitable for the upper managment to eliminate as many union jobs as possible here in the US.

It does seem silly to pay a union worker $67 an hour when Toyota gets away with paying their American works $20. Can’t build them as cheap here as the imports can.

Anyone know exactly what the Chinese Buick lineup looks like? GM could slap the tri-shield on anything and the Chinese wouldn’t know the difference.

I know the LaCrosse (Allure, here in Canada, as LaCrosse is Quebecois slang for masterbation) is one of the mainstay’s of Buicks Chinese lineup. Perhaps they could also dump the hapless Terazza there.

buenos, the US/Canada LaCross is very different than the Chinese version. Buick also has a larger lineup in China than they do in the US that is newer than ours. This news should come as no surprise to anyone thats seen the differences in the lineups.

I stand corrected… according to Wikipedia they sell a version of the hapless Montana in China, as well as a number of rebadged Daewoo’s and a couple of Holdens by the looks of it.

Good luck with getting that job. A bunch of my friends apply, unless your black, mexican or someother minority its nearly impossible to get in, thanks to old guys that are collecting 90k a year to push a button that refuse to quit.

YOU ALL SAID IT SRTAIGHT OUT, UNIONS ARE CAUSING THE DEMISE OF THE AMERICAN INDUSTRY, IF YOU MAKE THEM MAD THEY KILL YOUR BUSINESS. MY BROTHER JUST JOINED A LOCAL LABOR UNION HERE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND SAID HE HAS NEVER SEEN SO MANY HIGH PAID LAZY BASTATDS IN HIS LIFE. HE QUICKLY QUIT AND MOVED ON TO A BETTER JOB WHERE YOU MAKE WHAT YOURE WORTH. ANYWAYS AT LEAST OUR CHINEESE ENEMIES HAVE A STRANGE TASTE FOR BUICKS.

When I toured the Bowling Green Corvette/XLR plant, I was enamored by the way these cars are assembled. I also saw things that really hammered home the negative impact of unions. Throughout the plant, workers were taking breaks in numerous, special break areas. Very odd was the they are allowed to smoke in these areas! What other production plant allows smoking? But the kicker was the legacy wall, where there were hundreds of pictures of all the retirees from the Bowling Green facility. When you realize that in addition to the insane accomodations made for current autoworkers, GM us still paying a good portion of those same benefits to every person on that wall, it becomes clear why its tougher for GM to make decent cars.

LaCrosse- a new Chinese design
Regal- yep, the US one from the 90’s
GL8- a Chevy minivan with a Buick grille
Excelle sedan/wagon- US Suzuki Forenza

s60 i just wanted to say i posted a negative remark about one of your comments a few days ago, but you were right, sometimes when youre loyal to a manufacturer its just hard to accept the truth. And the truth is gm has let all of their loyal base dwindle, hopefully they can keep the unions at bay long enough to make a full range of good products instead of one or two good products and 20 bad ones. :) so i apologize for being pig headed and close mindedly rude.,

Just a quick note. GM china has significantly redesigned the above vehicles for their market. The LaCrosse is based on the US LaCrosse (W car) but has a different body/interior. The Regal (W car) is really old in China but has the same body with different fascias and different interior. Pretty much they redo the interiors for their market. Most of the parts are made in China (ie the entire old Regal is made there except for a few parts)

At least China is a market where GM can actually compete in terms of quality and reliability.

Buick isn’t really a luxury marque in China, and the trim etc. are more like standard cars, albeit a step up from the standard Volkswagen Santanas and the like.
(The really common actual luxury marques in China, as far as I can tell, are Audi, Mercedes and BMW.)
