American consumers really like crossovers. Despite an already crowded marketplace, automakers from Audi to Subaru are scrambling to develop new models to satisfy demand, with Buick being the latest company to add a new crossover to its lineup.

A report from Automotive News suggests that Buick is developing a new small crossover based off the subcompact Chevrolet Sonic’s Gamma II platform. Details on the vehicle are scarce at this point, but we do know that the vehicle is slated to go on sale sometime next year.

It’s a safe bet it will feature a Buick’s flowing global design language in combination with obligatory crossover touches like slightly raised ground clearance. No word on what engines could be offered, but the 1.4-liter turbo four from the Sonic is a possibility, as are the Chevy Malibu’s upcoming 2.5-liter four and the eAssist mild-hybrid powertrain from the Lacrosse.

Automotive News also reported that GM is considering offering a Chevrolet-badged variant of the crossover, but fears that the it could cannibalize Sonic sales might prevent that vehicle from ever seeing the light of day.
