Production Buick Velite-based model confirmed

05/31/2007, 10:51 AM

By Nick

General Motors will build a production version of its 2004 Buick Velite concept by the end of the decade, Troy Clarke, president of GM North America told Car and Driver in a recent interview.

The Velite was previewed as a convertible, but the automaker will likely build both sedan and convertible variants, according to the magazine. It will be built on GM’s Zeta architecture.

While a final name has not yet been picked, GM is open to keeping the Velite badge. Velite will be Buick’s only rear-wheel-drive vehicle, according to Clarke. All other models will remain front-drive.

This is definitely bigger than the Kappa platform. I wonder if it’s the new Alpha platform.

I do like it, this could be a big hit amongst older adults. Having rear seats makes it fun yet practical. Aside from the Chinese Park Avenue, this is the first Buick I’d ever consider owning.

I see a little bit of the G6 vert in the body. Since the G6 is supposed to eventually go RWD Alpha in the future, I wonder if this is a little bit of a preview?

Maybe they should call it “Reatta”.

Hope GM works on the crash protection after seeing the miserable results from the G6 convertible last night.

un-bling the XLR, give it a curvier body, waterfall grill, and some portholes. Give it a V6 with a softer suspension. Finish with a shiny Buick badge and call it a day. Reatta II.

If it comes out looking 90% like the concept it could do wonders for Buicks image. While young people wouldn’t flock to it in droves Buick could easily once again position itself as the auto maker for those with wealth, but don’t want the pompous side effects of a BMW and wish for more individuality than the Lexus Lemmings. With the Lucerne, Chinese Lacrosse (coming stateside), Velite, and the Enclave Buick would have a nice round up of vehicles that would appeal to a broad segment of buyers & wouldn’t overlap too much with any of GM’s other brands. If they stuck a turbocharged 6 in the Velite coupe & called it the Velite GNX they could even drive up the brands resale value by keeping production numbers low. Buick would be a true Lexus competitor (at least in most segments).

GarbageMoCo, you are correct that the G6 convertible received a low rating, but you conveniently forgot that Saab, also GM received top honors. The Velite is the perfect look for future Buicks IMO, nice job!

Don’t be so fast to take credit for the Saab on behalf of GM. While the 9-3 shares the same platform as the G6, it has been re-engineered in Sweden and is assembled there as well. What GM should do is to learn from the 9-3. For what it’s worth, the G6 is a failure when it comes to safety.

Something about the front-end I don’t like about this Buick.

throw in a hardtop coupe version along with the sedan and convertable and you would have sort of a poor mans bentley GT/flying spur/gtc kinda line up. My only fear with this is that GM will over use the platform, and have nearly indentical vehicles in their other lines, we all know they cant resist doing that.

Seriously MHW, I know that, and kudos were given to the 9-3. B

But what is pathetic is the Saab came out first, in 2003 and yet the NEWER model G6 it based itself off of flopped. Match that with the cheapo interior, the 200hp pushrod, 4-speed slushbox, “let’s go back to 1995″ right out of the gate design, it is easy to pick on the G6 as a very poor line of automoiles.

25 grand tops. If Buick even tries to price it comparably to a Lexus, it’ll about as popular as the Crossfire. At least 25 grand gets a crosshop with the Solara.

Garbage, have to pick on the V6 base of the G6 to be able to bash it?

For a little more than $24k, the G6 is equipped with a 3.6L DOHC V6 with 252hp, and a 6-speed manumatic.

Clarke says Velite will be Buick’s only RWD vehicle, but also says a sedan and convertible will share this platform. What is the point of a sedan and convertible sharing the same name? The convertible (and hopefully coupe variant) should pick up the Riviera name, and a sedan version should definitely be Roadmaster or Park Avenue.

Unless value priced, it will shoot of the gates to be declared a success then fall on it’s face.

Every car maker is looking to get premium pricing, but competition is stiff. This car is good, but not good enough for premium pricing.

Soltisce(sp?) & Sky works because of value pricing & gotta-have factor.

Yeah, isn’t it a bit late for this thing to finally get a production nod? The hype for this was 3 years ago, and the window of opportunity to capitalize on the concept car has passed. It’s an old design now, it’s just not as stunning as it was.
