U.S. President George Bush has asked Congress to lift a cap on tax credits for hybrid vehicles. Currently, the maximum number of tax credits for hybrid vehicles is 60,000 per year per manufacturer. “The easiest way to promote fuel efficiency is to encourage drivers to purchase highly efficient hybrid or clean diesel vehicles,” Bush said in an address to the Renewable Fuels Association summit in Washington. “If the automakers sell more than their limit, new purchasers are not eligible for the full tax credit. Consumers who buy hybrids currently receive up a tax credit worth up to $3,400. Currently, the change would only benefit Toyota and its customers, because the automaker sells more than 60,000 hybrids a year. Yesterday, we reported that Mr. Bush had ordered an inquiry into possible price gouging by oil/gas companies.

These are the little things that help, and its a easy thing for our government to do. Its a wonder why it didn’t happen long ago, or why more things like this don’t happen.

I don’t buy it. It is a right wing conspiracy. They are trying to pull the wool over our eyes. The administration is using this as a distraction. No more lies…. BWAHAHAAAAAAAAA!!!! sorry, I couldn’t keep a straight face any longer!
Ask ANY economist: the tax cuts and tax credits are a GOOD thing. I think this will also be a good thing.

You notice how neither Fed or State pols will suggest taxes on fuel be eliminated for the next X-months. They’d rather RAISE the tax to teach us a lesson – then spend it on ‘Bridges to Nowhere’, the ‘Forever War’, etc.
Bush: You want to lower my cost of gas; drop the federal tax on it. Will’ya?

Drop the federal tax of 18.4 cents a gallon and have the states either do the same, or lower them, For example in PA the gasoline tax is 49 cents a gallon!

Nick, buy a car with a smaller engine. Cheap gas is not part of the governments mandate. Unless there is something about cheap gas in the federalist papers I seem to have missed.

Better to extend the incentive to ALL CARS that achieve a certain MPG target, not just to favor particular types of technology.
A Toyota Yaris with a gaoline engine should get the incentive before a Ford Escape Hybrid that gets far fewer MPG.
