Cadillac considering CTS coupe, crossover

08/28/2006, 8:13 AM

By admin

General Motors is seriously considering building coupe and crossover versions of its forthcoming 2008 CTS, which will go on sale next year. The proposed plan is designed as an answer to BMW’s 3-series which is offered in sedan, coupe, convertible, and wagon variants. GM previewed concept versions of the coupe and crossover to top dealers recently, according to Automotive News. Cadillac General Manager Jim Taylor confirmed new CTS-based models were in the works. One source told the trade publication a third variant — a convertible, perhaps — was also possible, though none of the spinoffs had been approved so far. Cadillac is expected to unveil the production 2008 CTS sedan in the near future, and possibly related concept cars, too. In April, GM offered a teaser of what appeared to be a concept version of a new CTS during a 60 Minutes documentary.

Ugly as hell to me but it will sell to “patriotic” buyers. If the interior quality gets a major upgrade then it may worth a look given the cheap price tag.

When buying a car cadillac wouldn’t even be on my list. Rather buy a pony car like the Dodge Challenger

isn’t the SRX the crossover version of the CTS now?

Veda, If you don’t like the styling, that is alllowed. Stuart, I you prefer a failed nameplate from the 1970’s that is also allowed.

LLN, What happened? I guess you wrote this story when it was news and it got lost. You finally got around to posting it? That’s OK, but it would have been nice if you had updated it since the 60 Minutes piece.

I’d love to see it as a coupe. I hate 4 door cars but love the CTS. With an updated interiour [ as hinted for the 08 upgrade ] it can sway some buyers from the 3 series for sure.

Richard… who are you to tell us if our comments are allowed? And this was a recent article.
I don’t think this will be able to perform with BMW 3 series.. Cadillacs are ok when it comes to certain things, but I don’t think they could match up to BMW 3 series unless they do really good on this one. I’ve been in a few Cadillacs and BMWs and BMWs just come with more features then Cadys… but then again we’re talking about a different price range somewhat.

Hater: the CTS was aimed at the rwd, $30k+ v6/v8 entry/mid luxury segment, also occupied by the 3, g35, etc.. so yes, the CTS does compete.

You are correct that both cater to a slightly different crowd, but the next-gen CTS should be an extremely competitive model for the segment.

I respect the abilities of BMW, but I don’t like the price, styling or the wine and cheese tofu addict image that comes along with one. Plus, Cadillac builds true luxury cars, like Mercedes. BMW and Infiniti build sport sedans; Lexus tries to straddle the middle. I like pure waftable luxury and flashy styling, so the Cadillac would be on the top of my compact sedan list, but I’m waiting for the zeta Buick and Cadillac and the imperial. Mercedes S550 is my dream car BTW; Phantom is my absurdly unrealistic dream car.

Cadillac is getting more expensive these days
I remember when I was a kid in the early 90s I only saw old people drive them…

Cadillac should have never gone into the “truck/suv business.”
I was happy when cadillac made the caterra which was an opel (rebadged) that was the only car that didn’t look boxy, and since they discontinued that disign, they’ve gone back to be boxy…In otherwords, its an overpriced Chevy, it’s fine to have a few models, but it would be nicer to break out of the shell…All the new models look the same to me, there is no difference.
big and bulky may not be always a good thing

Kyle, of the entire lineup, only the Escalade models are shared… and those have different interiors, exteriors, and powertrains. Are you just uninformed?

I don’t know… They just look the same from the “outside”…may not be inside or under the hood

The aero look is out; the box is back in vogue from everything from the scion and caliber to the luxury class. The late 80s, 90s jellybean is dead, may it never return. When it comes to luxury cars big and bulky has never gone out of style, they have to convey a presence of prestige, power; even intimidation, soft curves and round shapes simply can’t do that.

like what I mean is the nose of the vehicles
the cosmetic styling or the back of most of their “car” line up
I realise that the escalade is a fancy suburban and the ext is a fancy chevrolet Avalanche.

If you go to The Old Car Manual Project web site at http://www.tocmp.com and look at the Domestic model ranges from the 50s through to the late 70s, the range of body styles and engines and options was huge. The styling was glamorous and who wouldn’t want an Impala from 57 through to 70. there were sedans, hard top sedans, wagons, convertibles and Coupes. If the Domestic manufacturers could provide such a range of choice with that glamor again they would be unbeatable.

Cadillac….hmmm….I have a funny story to tell….I saw a guy who is driving a Escalade into the gas station where I fill the gasoline for my Jeep…I was filling up a plus grade and it was around 4 gal on the meter. And that guy ran into the cashier and came back…20 seconds later…he left. Since I was next to the pump he used, I wonder what in the world that the Esalade can fill up faster than my jeep. I went over to check out…and guess what?….he can only afford a $5.00 worth gas. I was so speechless.I wonder if he have to beg someone to get the gas money somewhere. Geee…..

A lux. car buyer cannot afford the $3.00/gal gas??

I think BMW, MB, Lexus, or Infiniti buyers would not have such problem.

You would not believe the amount of Hummerss I see on the break down lane of local highways. Nobody around either. Maybe they ran out of gas?

Good thing is none of the wheels were snapped off

CTS coupe will not appeal to 335i buyers. At all. How can you beat a BMW twin turbo inline-6? You can’t.

And I know all you GM-loving Americans will say LS2. Yawn. “Throw and LS2 in it” seems to be GM’s solution for everything…

Elvisosa,
Your observation underlines a huge problem in our country these days. One’s projected image that must appear greater than the reality- no matter what. I sometimes wonder if we now drive to pose, or to really drive? The condition of our 3 auto-titans, now falling like so many colossi of Rhodes does seem linked somehow.

Yeah, the SRX basically is a crossover CTS, just a little bigger. Same, EXACT interior. I think they should make a coupe version of the CTS, and only sell CTS-V’s in the coupe form. It’d be a good M3 competitor, since I see WAY more M3’s than CTS-V’s
