Cadillac CTS Coupe won’t spawn a convertible

05/15/2008, 12:04 PM

By paulee

A convertible version of the upcoming Cadillac CTS coupe is stillborn, new reports find. With both Infiniti planning a G37 convertible and Lexus an IS hardtop, and the Germans already offering its convertibles in the BMW 3-series drop-top and Audi’s A4, it seems Cadillac will miss its chance to battle in the competitive market.

“This issue of a convertible is one of the very rare times where we decline the offer to comment,” said Cadillac spokesperson David Caldwell, according the Inside Line. While this isn’t a flat-out denial, it doesn’t answer any questions either. Instead, it seems Cadillac will offer a more utilitarian wagon version of the CTS. The only convertibles in the luxury maker’s range are the flagship hardtop XLR and XLR-V.

Why bother with a CTS convertible? If you want a drop-top caddy just get the XLR.

Convertibles are waaaaaaaaay over-rated and too girly looking. Kind of like mustangs

XLR is priced twice as high as a CTS convertible would likely land. That’s like comparing a M-B SLK with an SL.

I think they’re just trying to cover the XLR’s ass. A CTS drop top would crush sales of the XLR, not that there’s that much to begin with.

In my opinion CTS coupe has oversize butt and it is just difficult to spawn with it.

If they do make it a convertable it will be a coupe made into a convertable. Latley the Convertalbes have been made first with the body stiffer in design before the coups’versons like the Upcoming Lexus the BMW 3 series and 6 series the Volvo C70 convertable.

an xlr has two seats; a cts convertible would have four or five. that’s why you’d bother with a cts convertible. it’s more like comparing an sl with a clk.

Would not be very attractive as a convertible. 3 Series would outsell it

I was just going to say the 2-seat vs. 4-seat thing, but I see that Jordan beat me to it. A 4+ seat convertible would be a good option.

Maybe Cadillac just realized the one shortcoming of their stubby fastback styling.. nowhere for the retractible hardtop to retract into!

Even a fabric roof on this CTS coupe would dramatically change the shape.. so they are probably correct in nixing the idea.

If they really want the CTS to compete with BMW then I think they need to have the convertible option along with the sedan, coupe, and wagon… I think the idea is still simmering, just moved to the back burner for now.
