Report: Cadillac CTS-V Wagon a go

09/18/2009, 2:30 PM

By Nick Aziz

556 horsepower in a station wagon? For sale in the United States? From General Motors? Yes, it’s hard to believe — but soon it’ll be a reality. According to a published report, the General has approved production of the Cadillac CTS-V Wagon, which won’t just be the fastest station wagon in North America — it could easily be the quickest estate in the world.

After extensive internal deliberation — we’ve heard back-and-forth rumors for month — General Motors has apparently decided to approve the V Wagon for series production, according to Edmunds.

It has long been known that Cadillac plans to launch a CTS-V Coupe alongside the standard two-door model, but the wagon variant comes as a bit of a surprise given economic conditions and Americans’ reluctance to buy station wagons. In fact, it even offering the CTS Wagon was a subject of debate. Nonetheless, it seems there’s a sufficient business case to move forward.

The CTS-V will do battle with the Mercedes E63 AMG Wagon and BMW M5 Touring. Mercedes has offered previous E-Class AMG models in America, but we’ve yet to hear whether the E63 will be imported. As for the M5, BMW has made it clear there are no plans to offer it here.

556 horses in an American wagon? That’s insane! Can you see Angelina Jolie and her millions of kids in the back of this thing running after Brad? She should be the representative for the promotion of this car. It will sale just because she is so hot and she would make everyone think its ok to drive a wagon again

@KarLoveBoy88. Hey, with 556 HP under the hood, it is ok to drive a station wagon again. Hell yah. I know I would. I wonder what the price tag will be on this thing. Probably in the range of $50K, give or take out the door.

Payton, if they move as many copies of this as they did the Magnum Cadillac will be doing cartwheels all the way to the bank. I know sales diminished to the point where it was dropped from the lineup but I almost wonder if that was more a case of Cerberus not knowing their ass from a hole in the ground when it came to the car business.

If it was still in production next yr I would be looking at the SRT 8 magnum, now ill have to settle for used… I know a guy who, among many other things, chopped a dodge viper rear diffusor and put it on his magnum – SICK. The only domestic competition for the caddy v wagon woulda been the Mag, oh well

for all those who think the cts-v wagon will be faster than the rs6 avant, first off, the audi makes 672 hp, and since it is limited will only go to 155. The caddy may not be limited. But take the limiter off, and it is bye bye caddy.

all numbers unverified:
rs6 avant has 580hp twin turbo 5.0L v10
1/4 mile in 12.2-12.6 seconds
0-60 in 4.5 or 4.6 seconds

cts-v SEDAN
(add a couple tenths for the 3-400 or so extra pounds the wagon will add)
556hp supercharged 6.2L v8
1/4 mile 12.0-12.4
0-60 3.9-4.1 (wow)
top speed 191 or 175 with the automatic

I think, even though this car, in wagon form, is but ugly, will do well against the e63 amg, m5 wagon, and rs6 wagon. That is a good crowd to be in the company of. However, here in the states. The e63 wagon is the only one that exists. This car will be virtually uncontended as the AMG is $80,000 or so.

As for the RS6 vs. CTS-V wagon argument. The RS6 is a silly fast car. I have seen some videos of that thing STOCK taking 996 Turbos and 360 Modenas in a straight line. No joke. I hope the CTS-V wagon can hang on but we will have to see. I think it will lose more than just a few tenths to 60 with the extra 350 lbs or so. By math alone it will be 9% slower to 60, all things being equal, which will translate to almost 4 tenths. Maybe 4.5 since I would imagine traction will be compromised with the disproportionate weight of the wagon hanging off the tail of the car. Anyways. It will be a good race but since I favor Audi out of the gate, that would be my pick regardless of a few tenths.

Tornado, you are right that there are no “hot” high priced wagons on the market besides AMG. The question in my mind, is there need for such market? This car may prove that there is, but Volvo and Audi always addressed the needs of those who want wagon for a price and don’t forget BMW 5 series. Sales of Vovlvo wagons went down with SUV coming on the market. I am sure it is not a high volume proposition, but will GM make money selling 5-6 thousands of those? Think of retooling cost alone. If nobody stepped up to this niche, is there a niche or a fluke (AMG) ? Perhaps anything with AMG label will find a customer, will anything with Caddy label do?

Reedfast, where are you coming up with those numbers? Sorry but the audi does not have that much hp. It is indeed a very fast car so we will just have to wait and see for a simple drag race. My money is on the supercharged V.

leftwing… yeah you are just sports car snobby. A wagon with this much power is the best of every world. And if anything, how is this more of an abomination than any of the 500+ horsepower SUV’s on the market? At least a wagon has all of the practicality without all of the weight and bull**** tall center of gravity. A fast wagon is a true jack of all trades. Some people like to carry things in their sports car.

P.S. TornadoGTI, the old E55 AMG wagon was actually FASTER to 60 than the E55 sedan, despite the weight, because there was more weight over the rear wheels and as thus provided more traction. I’m not sure if this carried over to the E63, but it was true with the 55. This could very well be the case with this car as well. The RS6 is a different story considering the quattro system.

hehe…i didn’t say that 500hp SUVs weren’t abominations ;) and i’m not against fast wagons, i’m looking to buy a mazdaspeed 3 after all…but something about crossing 500 hp in a wagon seems insane…that’s more hp than a ferrari f430…in a wagon…these would be high on my “hand me a rpg” list…

the CTS sedan has gone from a great car to an amazing lineup..
given the current situations and the governments watchful eye on GM, i am somewhat surprised they did this but in reality it would cost much to do… where is the Z28? profit margin are much higher on a caddy so form a business standpoint it makes sense but come on.
they could outsell the CTS-V wagon with the Z28 2-1 i think, but then again Z28 enter corvette prices on the same car lot… so many things to contradict myself on

enough mindless thinking… 556hp in a wagon is amazing, almost enough to make me forget Cadillac’s plans for a fwd/awd XTS

as exciting as this news is, i cant wait to drive the coupe

I was kind of excited about the CTS wagon until I made the mistake of going to Caddy’s website to look a prices and options. OUCH!!! I guess GM doesn’t want a lot of these in the public’s hand. Biggest beef is the the “affordable” range (mid$30s – low$40s) only come with a new 3.0 liter engine that doesn’t have much torque. If you want the Caddy 3.6, get ready to fork over mid$40s and up. That means they’re pricing the wagon significantly more than the sedan (most Euro companies only charge $1k-1.5k when going from sedan to wagon variant). Too bad. Sadly, this is the only wagon that GM had on the horizon. Everything else is a crossover.

That’s awesome! It will be a hot seller for a little while. Some rich people want to have fun bringing their kids to the soccer game. But it seems to me this car is a go because they have a major performance gap now that Pontiac is almost dead. However most Pontiac buyers, especially those who wanted to see a g8 wagon probably wont be willing or able to spend the money on the CTS-V wagon. I’m glad GM has the balls to take some crazy risks and build an awesome car like this but given the way the economy is they should be investing in other cars first. I’m very curious to see the performance numbers on this baby.

it makes about as much monetary sense as the veyron (VW looses 3.8 million each time they build one), but it will certainly be fun!

nice to see this car being made would be nice to see how it drives, it may actually have some advantages over the sedan. The dodge magnum (witch i will miss, if only it came with a manual i would have one) has in a few test stopped faster then the charger did. I think in a few others situation it handled a bit better but i don’t know for sure so it should be nice to see.

and for people who don’t understand it it not like there making vast numbers of them just a few and why not they making a greater profit of the car probably and a few out there are not going to hurt any one, most will probably be the base v6 sold and that will be enough for most but there are always those few you would have lost that sale too.

This might be the dawn of a new era where people in the US of all creeds and backgrounds will finally admit and realize that a wagon can be both hot, shred tires and be luxurious.

It might be the perfect replacement for my Saab 9-5 Aero wagon, if I win the lottery one of these days.

Thank you GM, for once I can’t talk trash about one of your decisions.
