Cadillac planning to downsize line

Although Cadillac’s SRX crossover SUV has been a hit with many media outlets, the luxury carmaker hasn’t seen the high sales it expected. Cadillac is apparently planning to replace the SRX with the BRX, a smaller crossover designed to compete with the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLK.

In addition, Cadillac will likely discontinue its also slow-selling STS and DTS models and replace them with a single rear-wheel drive (and almost certainly all-wheel-drive) car designed to compete with the BMW 5-Series. The STS was originally designed to compete with the 5-Series, but its front-wheel-drive platform has prevented it from ever being truly competitive. The DTS traces its routes back to the DeVille, but it has seen a serious sales slump in recent years.

Finally, Automotive News is now reporting that the Cadillac BLS, a small sedan based on the Saab 9-3 and built in Saab’s Trollhattan, Sweden, plant will likely come to the U.S. in its next generation. A redesigned BLS is expected in 2009 or 2010. The redesigned model will likely be assembled in Germany. It will almost certainly spawn a wagon version, although North American sales are unconfirmed for the wagon.

These vehicles will join Cadillac’s newly redesigned CTS, which will likely include a coupe variant later in its production cycle.

BLS - 3 series

CTS - 5 Series

New Rear Drive Sedan - 7 Series

The current STS is NOT front wheel drive - LLN, GET IT RIGHT!

Caddy will be some true competition when both of these new cars arrive. If the new CTS is any indication of where they are going then they are in very good shape.

FORD TAKE NOTE WITH LINCOLN!

Cadillac should replace their entire line up as every single car they have is hideous. The first time I saw the CTS I actually threw up and I had been feeling perfect that day. Cadillac, stop making so many stupid SUVs. They are the worst cars in today’s marketplace.

GMs plans to turn Cadillac into a “global brand” is a disaster, last year they sold fewer cars in the UK than Lamborghini.

They should make caddilacs cadillacs, not put a caddy logo on a chevy.

Has the cimmaron not taught them anything?

I could see sharing enggines, but beyond that, no!

I have seen 3 Lamborghinis on my travels in the UK, and only one Cadillac. Likewise, I have also seen countless Aston Martins, a Corvette and a couple of Ferraris. Cadillacs are just wrong. They market themselves as a luxury brand, yet the interior quality is pitiful. And now they’re giving us the BRX-crement.

They’ll lose a lot of loyal buyers with this. They run the risk of alienating the core buyer.

Figure the older crowd who grew up on Cadillacs know them as the big, cushy cruiser.
The athletes and rap stars relate to the Escalade.
The big Deville is a Livery special in Limosine, Taxi and coffin carrier form. Or Floridas retirment community car of choice.

Who are these people going to turn to if these things go away? Changing the formula after 80 years with the current formula could be a losing proposition. One need only look at the disasterous results from the BLS experiement in the UK. People don’t buy small Cadillacs.

I guess there is nowhere else to turn though. You would think that maybe Saab would have a better chance with this, but GM would never put their Swede above the “Mericun Iron!”. And Saab is pretty much dead weight anyways.

Maybe Saturn would be a better option.

by my count the article talks about cadillac losing three models and gaining three models (four if you count the speculated BLS wagon as separate). that doesn’t sound like much of a downsize.

I don’t think its necessary to downsize the SRX. Just make it look less wagon-like. That was its biggest issue that hurt sales - lots of people don’t like their crossover or SUV to look like a tall station wagon. It wasn’t the size, it was the shape that was an issue for many buyers.

Like generally everyones said so far, I don’t think Cadillac should change it’s formula. I really like what I see on the Cadillac CTS, it looks like a potent competitor, but we’ll just have to see.

I’d rather see Saab have produce a smaller car, although maybe not a compact, than Cadillac. What I think Cadillac needs to do is get it’s image up- create better quality designs, and make the car more exclusive than it currently is. Both Cadillac and Lincoln need to do just that- get their image and market up. It’s not that they can’t, but partly because the people in management don’t know how to handle such a company.

Oh yes… Nowei, Cadillac is downsizing their lineup by one model-

*Getting rid of SRX, STS and DTS
*Importing BLS
*Creating BRX and STS/DTS replacement

That means the American market will have the same number of cars in their lineup, but will be getting rid of the SRX, DTS and STS. Globally, Cadillac will have one less model.

Cadillac needs a big car to go up against the S550, 750i, LS460 A8 etc. The car should be built on a refined version of zeta, should look like a scaled down SIXTEEN concept, with the drive train out of the escalade or that new Northstar2.0 they are said to be developing. I’ve read reviews of the new CTS on Edmunds, motor trend and Car and driver and they haven’t been so enthusiastic about an American car since the 300C came out. C&D called the interior “leagues” ahead of the new c class Mercedes. The strategy is working, don’t change it.

I think it is smart. The SRX is probaby to close to the Escalade and making it a bit smaller would help differentiate them not too mention peddling a slightly downsized CUV has better CAFE appeal. Probably the same can be said of the changes in the car line-up.

But when you take away the traditional Cadillac qualities, you’re starting from ground level. Look at the Lincoln LS in 1998, Great car, dead car. People weren’t going to give the brand a chance because for years they gave the public nothing but big, cushy cruisers and livery cars…

And the Navigator.

As much as it disappoints “CTS Driver”, Cadillac is not much different. They have had a lineup with big cars which up until the CTS were all front-drivers. Now they have the CTS, STS, XLR and look at the sales of Cadillac in general. Besides the idiotic Escalade, and CTS, sales have remained unchanged.

The rear drive STS bombed, the SRX won over nobody but the editors of CarandDriver and the XLR sold probably 5 copies a year. Even the supposed “Sporty” V-series didn’t do much to win over the German crowd. They just pulled in the Corvette lovers who wanted a sedan instead of an impractical coupe.

So the Escalade is their saving grace and with high petrol prices, but it’s not small. Although the Slade could be doomed to extinction (an 18mpg hybrid version will do squat IMO because people looking to save a buck on gas ARE NOT LOOKING AT BIG BOF SUV’s!) but I digress…

Look at the CTS, it’s the size of a 5-series which IMO is the reason why it sells. A model below it will devalue the brand. Killing the large vehicles like the DTS will alienate the above mentioned customers. And who’s saying they’re all going to run to Buick afterwards?

This could be a bad move…

I’m liking gm’s plans for cadillac. I would be interested in buying a BLS-V (hopefully with the new LS3 in it). If they make every car in their new lineup as good as the 2008 cts, then they will have no problem beating out BMW and Mercedes.
I don’t even know where some of these idiots come up with this stuff. Anyone who thinks that Cadillac hasn’t changed from the 90’s has not driven any of the new cadillacs. Drive an STS-V, and quit repeating what you hear from foreign-biased car magazines and other idiots who comment on this site.
