Although Cadillac ’s SRX crossover SUV has been a hit with many media outlets, the luxury carmaker hasn’t seen the high sales it expected. Cadillac is apparently planning to replace the SRX with the BRX, a smaller crossover designed to compete with the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLK.
In addition, Cadillac will likely discontinue its also slow-selling STS and DTS models and replace them with a single rear-wheel drive (and almost certainly all-wheel-drive) car designed to compete with the BMW 5-Series . The STS was originally designed to compete with the 5-Series, but its front-wheel-drive platform has prevented it from ever being truly competitive. The DTS traces its routes back to the DeVille, but it has seen a serious sales slump in recent years.
Finally, Automotive News is now reporting that the Cadillac BLS, a small sedan based on the Saab 9-3 and built in Saab ’s Trollhattan, Sweden, plant will likely come to the U.S. in its next generation. A redesigned BLS is expected in 2009 or 2010. The redesigned model will likely be assembled in Germany. It will almost certainly spawn a wagon version, although North American sales are unconfirmed for the wagon.
These vehicles will join Cadillac’s newly redesigned CTS, which will likely include a coupe variant later in its production cycle.
