Less than two weeks after the introduction of the Ciel concept car, it seems that Cadillac is in the initial stages of preparing a flagship sedan modeled after the elegant convertible.

A Detroit Free Press report indicates that Cadillac has green-lighted the development of a full-size luxury sedan built on a rear wheel drive platform, enabling it to take on segment heavyweights like the BMW 7-Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Though a flagship inspired from the Ciel is at least several years away, the car already has customers excited about the future of the brand, Cadillac marketing chief Don Butler said.

“People are coming into the showroom talking about this vehicle,†he told the Free Press. “It kind of adds to the psyche of positive feeling about the brand.â€

Cadillac will look to capitalize on the buzz created by the Ciel by doubling its small model lineup with the introduction of the XTS large sedan, the BMW 3-Series-rivaling ATS and the Chevy Volt-based ELR over the next two years. Cadillac’s sales are up 9.5 percent through July, despite the discontinuation of the STS and DTS sedans.
