There was a time when General Motors’ Cadillac brand was the world’s standard for luxury motoring but, thanks to more than a few suspect models, that title doesn’t hold true today. As such, Cadillac has had a difficult time gaining a foothold in the European market, forcing the brand to pull out of half its European markets.
The Cadillac brand is currently sold in 25 European countries, but that number will be reduced to less than half in the coming weeks. “We will take it down to less than a dozen markets,” a GM Europe source told Automotive News Europe. GM will continue to market the brand in such countries as Russia, the UK and Switzerland where the marque is still a strong seller.
GM was forced to pull the Cadillac brand out of most of its European markets because of poor sales. The company that distributes Cadillac for GM in Europe — Kroymans Corp. – filed for bankruptcy on March 20th, largely due to falling GM sales. Kroymans also distributed the Hummer and Corvette brands for GM in Europe – both of which have experienced declining sales in recent months.
GM planned to sell 7,500 Cadillac vehicles a year in Europe when it signed on with Kroymans back in 2003, but only managed to sell 4,556 units in 2008.

How much money do you want to spend on marketing and distribution of your products for a few thousand sales – especially when money is tight. I agree with sticking to the European countries where you have the best response to your product for now.

I kid people not: I passed a Cadillac dealer – separate from the local Opel dealers, that actually had a couple CTSs in the showroom.
But with all the Porsche Cayennes and Audi Q7s (mostly Diesels) that I saw this summer, the occasional Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8s, and a few Audi RS-8s – notwithstanding $7 per gallon gasoline – never did I see one CTS on the road.
Problem is those CTSs with the V-6 get huge engine displacement tax which raises the price paid to more than $60,000.
That is Mercedes E-class money.
You have to wonder what are they going to do with those unsold CTSs?

GM is obviously going through tough times right now. Them pulling their Cadillac brand in certain places is a good idea, if its not selling their then we have to redirect and look at different options. and in Respone to Ring-Taxi’s comment Caddilac doesnt have to be sold in every corner of the world to be considered a World Standard. Say what you want about GM but you cant refute the fact that they build a car that kicks the feet from under the M5, E63, RS6,S8 and alot of other two door sports cars. If we just let the numbers do the talking the CTS-V is the world standard when it comes to super sedans because nothing in its class out their can beat it.

Cloud cuckoo land ‘master yoda’. There is nothing world standard about Cadillac- experience the rest of the world for yourself and you’ll notice that we have corners every now and then. The ‘figures’ you state are all about straight lines. Fine for California freeways.
Why GM would continue to flog these things in the UK market I don’t know. I have seen 9 month old demonstrators for sale at 40% of the list price. Staggeringly cheap. They can’t give them away.

@ JakeK66 , they sell Corvettes in Europe , but they are really expensive and because of the huge engine you have to pay some serious taxes in a lot of countries in Europe. As fan said , the Corvette is viewed as a pimp mobile and usually associated with bad taste.
GM tried hard to change that mentality with the C6 and they partially succeeded, but people who can afford a Corvette here expect a bit of creature comfort from a car, not just pure performance , cause they can buy a Lotus for pure performance.

I completely agree that nearly all GM cars are rubbish. When Top Gear did an episode with a Caddy, Charger and Corvette, I was VERY surprised that they liked the cars. They even said that super Corvette was good on a mountain road with corners, that possibility is weird to me.
I live in Los Angeles, California, and despite the perception that we can storm through straight freeways all day long, that is not the case. Our freeways suck because they’re uneven and full of traffic, but there are some places where handling matters. We have canyon roads 30 minutes from downtown that will challenge any car and a stretch of the 110 freeway that, while less than 10 miles long, is a great drive to blast through, because it was built to follow a winding creek bed.
Anyway, my point is that there are Americans, and Californians, who love cars that can corner as much as Europeans. Don’t think we’re all fat, lazy, Suburban/Expedition/Hummer driving idiots-Just a lot of us.

Escalade – big in NA, but the Range Rover is king everywhere else
DTS – poor man’s S-Class, and an upscale airport taxi
STS – a decent alternative to the Euro midsizers.
XLR – they still make those?

from my business-trips, i must agree with raineman, after the bush-years, perception of anything american has changed around the world. while it was coll and aspirable before, this has changed with the reign that guy had. as an american, you dont have a bonus anymore in the rest of the world, you’ll start (if your lucky) with equal chances. chances are, though, that there will always be a certain … cautiousness … with the people you talk to… not sure if they expect you to suddenly start another war or stage another faked election or spouter things like “no sex before marriage”…
dont think people do that by decision… but i cant really judge them for that, either… the US has acted and reacted really stupid throughout the bush-years….
this, of course had its effects on their perception of US-Products, and with raising gas-prices (7-8$ per gallon), the huge, yet ineffecient gas-guzzlers and the constant whining about 4$per gallon in the US, one may understand why the rest of the world sees the US as uncaring, ignorant and stupid.
stating this is no sign of hate towards the US, its rather the current status quo… which will hopefully change sooner than later, cause i know the US has the potential to prove those ideas wrong… i just hope it would finally start doing so (obama, like him or not, has been a huge step forward in that direction, though)
comments like “buyusa” is spoutering… well… lets call them contraproductive at the very least… this is, to quote rumsfeld, OLD America…

A 2005 C6 (6 litre), with about 30,000 miles on it is for sale for the sum of 700,000 danish crownes, or to put it in dollars: About 127,000 $.
A cadillac CTS-V 2.8 V6 automatic – 2008 with about 5,000 miles on it – is 750,000 crownes – or about 136,000 $ dollars – aint nobody gonna by a car priced like that. If people are gonna pay that kinda money in europe they buy benz, audi or bmw.

These scumbags (you know who you are) somehow equate a failure of the big three as revenge against Bush. Nothing short of a complete collapse of this country will satisfy these animals. This is the same type of mentality the hijackers on 9/11 had.

I do not care how fast the CTS is.
It will NEVER be considered in the same class as BMWs, Mercs, Audis, etc in the minds of the people who love those cars, not in America, nor in Europe.
This will serve Cadillac right for turning their back on their core customers and the types of cars that made it famous.
People who think the CTS has finally gotten the blessing of these snobs and the motoring/internet press that caters to them are kidding themselves.
On the other hand, REAL Cadillacs are appreciated in Europe by the people who appreciate what the brand was. It is a small bunch, but still they exist.
Nobody in Europe likes or wants any Cimmarons, Allantes, Cateras, CTSs, or BLSs. If they did, they would sell, which they do not, hence the pullout.

Masteryoda- I’ll let SomeGreek’s response override any desire I might have to respond to your claims about the CTSv.
I would like to let you know that I do not hate America (In spite of what the genius BUYUSA thinks- it is not necessary to hate America in order to admit that your domestic car industry has been royally shagged). In fact, I have family & some very close friends there- last time I went I loved it. I drive a new Chevy SUV so I have some experience of contemporary GM product. What’s more, I totally agree with you that BMW’s suck. I hate them- they’re ugly, crass, brash, hard-riding and overtly aggressive. The X6 is an abomination.
I’m not biased against US cars because I have any underlying hatred for America (although when people spew pathetic comments like that you can half-understand why some people do feel that way). I am not biased against US cars at all. I have an opinion, based on experience. And as far as I know I am afforded the right to have my own opinion, whatever it may be. Different strokes and all that…
However, repeatedly insisting that something is the fastest and best-handling sedan available does not make it true. Neither does appending the word PERIOD to the end of a subjective statement. The CTSV is, apparently, a bloody good car, probably the best Caddy in many years. It’s true. But that doesn’t make it a world standard by any stretch of the imagination. Sorry my little green jedi but that’s just the way it is. Try appending the phrase IN MY OPINION to your subjective statements instead of the word PERIOD.
Oh, and by the way, you should keep your STFU award and put it with the ‘Best Cadillac Ever’ award that the CTSV just got. Thanks anyway.
