Import automakers have dominated the luxury sales charts in the United States for more than a decade , but Cadillac says it will be gunning for the top spot within the next few years on the back of a completely revamped model lineup.

Luxury automakers like Lexus, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi have left Cadillac in the dust in terms of overall sales since the turn of the century, but General Motors' luxury division believes it will be "slugging it out" for the No. 1 spot within a matter of years.

"Why not? We've been there before," Don Butler, vice president of marketing for Cadillac, told The Detroit News.

Cadillac was last the nation's best-selling luxury automaker in 1997. Lexus had been the top luxury automaker in the U.S. for the last 11 years, but BMW wrestled away the title last year.

Cadillac will fuel its run at the top spot with a thoroughly revamped lineup. Cadillac is currently rolling out its XTS flagship and the 3-Series rivaling ATS sedan is slated to hit dealerships within a matter of days. Next year Cadillac will launch a plug-in hybrid called the ELR, as well as new versions of its CTS and Escalade. Beyond 2013 Cadillac is planning to introduce five new or redesigned models.
