I agree- Caddys shouldn’t have to offer these as an option or “Special Edition”…they should be standard for a top-of-the-line brand. By the way, “Platinum” should only refer to one of two things- wedding bands or credit cards. Not trim levels.

90Z, the point is if you and I walk into a Caddy dealership each with $70K to burn on a car, and you want carbon fiber with titanium and I’d rather have leather with wood, we should both be able to drive out with *exactly* what we want. Hell, if 1c3d0g wants his with black naugahyde seats and Helly Kitty curtains, he should be able to get that too.
With these designs, it just doesn’t seem like ‘you get what you pay for’ with Cadillac..

The wheels look horrible on the XLR. I like the body designs, but the only caddy that I would buy is a Escalade.

global_lightning: I’ll take “some” chrome (not rap star over the top chrome) instead of woodgrain any day. Most of the time the woodgrain is very fake looking and cheapens the look of the interior. Leave it to the old people who buy the DTS. I’d rather have the carbon-fiber look or something similar.

A4 nailed it. Given the price range and competition, leather and wood should be standard, not the plastic and vinyl these ‘upgrades’ replace.
Also, some of us aren’t attracted to ‘brigher chrome’. Give the customer the option of bright, regular, or subdued chrome; color matched or even blacked out.

I don’t the the XLR has aged at all really. I still see people gawk at it when it drives by. The CTS is aged, but the STS just needs an updated interior. It didn’t take the Koreans just one generation to pass us, it will take a bit for Caddy to be back where it belongs.

Cadillac is no longer where it once was…it sat on its laurels while others established precious market share by building what the customer wanted. The STS is a larger version of the CTS (Who thought that up, as it is usually the other way around?). The CTS-V destroys it rear differential, and GM will not resolve the issue the correct way (as we all know GM is hurting for money, business, and its future existence). DTS = buy a Buick Lucerne and invest the money you saved elsewhere. The XLR “was” a decent automobile (still not worth over $50K) when it was first released, but it’s old now (surprising just how quick the design aged). GM can spruce up the aged interiors of their Platinum series, but who really cares as the cars will still suffer the same low resale value? Bob Lutz keeps professing how he’s concentrating on the interiors, blah, blah, blah, blah, and he’s wrought his hand in bringing back gaudy with the new CTS, but what still astounds me is how Lutz’s thinks he’s a one-man show (arrogant bastard). Interesting how Cadillac can only show their upcoming models under car covers and through TV journalism versus car shows like every car manufacturer does…what is GM hiding? GM is hiding the fact that they are behind the eight ball. Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Lexus dominate the luxury car market on every facet.

whoever said no cadillac is worth more than $50k is lacking common sense. What are you talking about? Cadillacs offer the luxury features and performance (AMG models aside) of their competitors at lower prices. Also, the V series cars are very worthy of respect. They arent as fast as AMG models (what is?) but they hold their own against anything else on the road. The STS-V and CTS-V get to 60 in 4.6secs and people are saying they are a joke. Anyone who believes that is a joke.

The Platinum series cars are just cheaper versions of the Designo cars that MB does. Why is no one whining about MB’s special edition models?

These Caddy interiors are better than anything Infiniti has done and are just as good as anything MB has out.

this is what BASE model caddy’s should be like. The more they know that “sprucing up” is necessary, they ought to know that its needed to compete in the segment. Such fit and finish packages arent offered on E’s and 5er’s. Give the STS 18’s standard. Why make them an option? It gives them a slight advantage. A “sport” package would likely be a better received option, as is evidenced by the sport packages available for the E350 and such packages as the A-Spec/Type-S packages/models with the TL. Packages such as this are going to revive the stereotype that only old people drive cadillacs. Inject more sport into your base models, you wowed people when you got it right with the V’s, but for the majority of your buyers, they want V-cues at non-V prices. Just dont give them the mesh grille, that can stay V-only.

Pathetic. I have always heard that ’special editions’ were a company’s attempt to boost sagging sales. I do like the chocolate colored leather, it reminds me of CoCo Puffs.

Part of me would rather drive an XLR instead of a Corvette. Corvette says wacky print shirt and some plastic Barbie next to you; the XLR says pimp with hot lady friend who gets paaaaaaiiiid.

There’s not a Cadillac out there today, V, Platinum, or otherwise that’s worth over $50K—not one. The V series was an attempt at competing with BMW’s M series—it didn’t. Cadillac simply has not had the product, quality-control, and worse of all—the resale value, to be in the leagues they profess to be in. Yes, at one time (when dinosaurs roamed the earth) Cadillac was a prestigious name. Today, they are little more than a namesake.

No way I’d pay extra for this. Definitely not worth it. If GM wants to make “special’ editions, then they need to make sure the “special” edition is well differentiated from the original (or don’t expect more money for the new version). I don’t see that here; reminds me of the first iterations of the Denali & Escalade on the 400s.
