I only clicked on this article because of the picture. I love my Corvette Corsa exhaust with tiger shark tips.

Also, you all realize that CAFE standards haven’t changed since they were created, whereas EPA mpg ratings have changed to reflect more realistic driving habits? Hitting the higher CAFE standards isn’t going to be all that difficult for car manufacturers. It’s not like they need to get 35.5mpg by EPA standards.

Sholdn’t they be working on balancing their budget? They already have some of the strictest emission regulations in the nation. They’re even trying to ban black cars… They’re inevitabely going to lose money with all this regulation. California leads the nation, but it seems that they’re leading us in the wrong direction. Sure, we need more efficient cars, but if people don’t WANT them, and prefer to drive Escalades and Tahoes, then that’s their choice. They’re paying for the gas, insurance, etc, right? It’s a free country, let’s keep it that way.

but caddy, how did that smog get there in the first place? ;P you want the smog gone, but you want to drive a smog machine…can’t have both, basically…life is full of tough choices!

i’m not too scared of the mpg numbers going up…these are fleet averages, right? there will still be a niche for sportier cars, but there may be fewer choices…or perhaps we’ll see some more sophisticated drivetrains with cylinder deactivation to get good highway numbers, yet give you the oomph you want when you need it…

i’m sort of a pay-as-you-go guy…go ahead and buy that camaro ss, but pay your enviro impact tax, which is based on how much of a smog machine or gas hog your car is…that wouldn’t make performance cars disappear, but you’d have to pay to play…

HAY I LIVE IN CALI. Just because the car you but is ECO-Friendly, dose not make you a better person. Also once you drive the car off the dealer lot, YOUR ON YOUR OWN! I own about 5 cars right now, and I will say NONE OF THEN WILL PASS SMOG! Every car I own I have modified for performance, and I can give a RAT-AS if they don’t pass smog, when that time comes I just trade the car in.

Besides, the MPG standard is only applicable to that year’s model car, and the smog law is for that model year car. A 2000 model year car has to pass 2000 year regulations. Not the new ones imposed. So 35.5MPG by 2016, who care’s? Auto makers will put out High Performance cars and the after market will make performance parts for the track and the street.

After living in CA for a few months now I am perplexed and annoyed by their government budget problems and their continual attack on cars (they want to repeal the emissions test exemption for 1973 and older cars now– how greedy and shortsighted).

35.5MPG is going to be hard to reach for everything BUT existing econoboxes. By the time 2016 rolls around the manufacturers will just have started to figure out how to deliver a driving experience we are used to that reaches that mileage goal. And that’ll be expensive.

40+ MPG by 2020 is going to make most people drive weedwhackers because the cost of getting V6 or V8 style performance from a 40MPG car is going to cost quite a bit in such a short timeframe.

The folks who are elected into office here seem to really think Californians want to drive the little bubble cars from Demolition Man.

I live in Cali and have my whole life. this state is something else. It has it’s pros and a lot of cons. What Cali needs to do is get that big vacuum from the movie space balls and suck all the fu*king smog out of the air. Then let us drive what ever we want. Sh*t we pay enough to live here. If I want to drive a car that gets 10mpg than that’s my choice. Stop putting regulations on sh*t.

CALIFORNIA’s standard should be whatever AMERICA’s standard is.

Stop fooling around with this one-up BS and wasting our time with extra catalytic converters and whatever else, enacting different regulations than the CAFE standard is only hurting the economy when it’s already vulnerable.

35.5 is good enough for 49 other states. Please!
