Effective January 1st, changes to California’s teen driving law will place some new restrictions on young drivers in an effort to reduce fatalities on the state’s roads. The new law requires teen drivers to have their license for one year before being allowed to drive between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., or before being allowed to transport young passengers (under age 18) without an adult in the car. The law applies both to teens who have not yet received their driver’s license and to those who have had their license for less than one year as of January 1st. A similar law is already in effect in California that restricts driving between midnight and 5 a.m., but applies to drivers who have only had their license for six months. A similar law was recently passed in the Canadian province of Ontario that restricts the number of young passengers new drivers can carry.
