Call for performance mod ban after deadly accident

06/05/2006, 6:15 AM

By admin

A deadly high-speed accident involving a (possibly) modified Honda Civic has some politicians in Toronto are calling for a ban on performance modifications for automobiles. While the Toronto Star article on the incident doesn’t specify exactly what type of modifications are being targeted, nitrous oxide is likely first on the hit list. Wheels columnist Jim Kenzie rightly asks, “if some 18-year-old — more likely, Mommy and Daddy — buys a Porsche 911 Turbo, that’s okay? [...] But if said 18-year-old buys a Civic and makes it as fast as a 911 Turbo, that isn’t okay?” Kenzie also points to the unfair ways law enforcement targets car enthusiasts. “Another example of the hypocrisy surrounding this issue occurs whenever enthusiasts organize track days so fellow car nuts can test their cars’ performance to the limit, in safety,” he writes. “You can almost guarantee that local cops will be stationed at every entrance and exit to the track, hassling the competitors for having blue windshield washer nozzles.”

There is NOTHING okay about parents buying their 18-year-old a 911 Turbo. NOTHING.

Anyways, If the lawmakers want to “help” then provide the proper funding and resources to go after the street racers. The NOS doesn’t drive the car, the person injecting the vehicle is fully responsible for the vehicle and all parts on it.

ummm there is a huge difference between a 911 and a civic with equal power.

While I don’t believe in a ban, I think that there should be some kind of deterrent in the form of a tax or increased insurance premiums for highly modified vehicles. Also, some kind of income verification such that money spent on mods is money that otherwise should not be going towards illegitimate kids, or medical insurance, or college, or a house payment. I am sick and tired of seeing illegals and wiggers spending $5k on a $2k civic when they have hungry kids and no education. THAT’s a crime and should be banned.

If I were a cop, I would write tickets for “blue windshield washer nozzles” as well. Damn ricers. :)

Many times I think people mod the cars without understand the big picture. Classic example of this is primer painted bumpers. “Oh you mean paint is expensive, damn I thought the $200 kit off eBay was enough.”

The same goes for mods. If your first mod is speed releated and not brakes or suspension, then you fit in this category. If you do 5 point harness without a roll cage or vise-versa then you fit in this category.

A civic isn’t equal to a porsche, I don’t care if it is as fast, cause odds are they didn’t spend the time to get everything else in balance, the least of which is the frame. Porsche can take a 100+mph hit can your civic?

All that being said, more laws isn’t the answer.

Hey Mike, I DID read the article – I was amusing myself with attempt at humour (or as you spelled it somewhere else, “humer”). Evidently spelling “it” at a minimum these days too, compadre.

Personally I understand and agree with the article. if you can afford a car with 500 horsepower from the lot, then you should be able to buy it. if you can afford a civic, then drive that, and deal with going slow untill you save enough to buy a faster car. The only thing that would be bad is that this would shut down companies such as Lingenfelter. This might also stop the kids pulling up next to me thinking I’d like to race a civic.

Given the recent number of corrupt and/or grand-standing, sound-bite-addicted elected officials, Canadian and US authorities have decided to ban politicians entirely.

/What the headline SHOULD have read.
//May as well ban the lawyers while we’re at it.

There are such things as legal and illegal mods to your car (example nitrous oxide, test pipe Etc. ) intakes, exhausts, headers, and such don’t do all that much for your car, i personally know having a civic myself, i take pride in what i have done to my car. Many people love making 500 horsepower civics more than other cars, and they can afford other cars, u have no right to tell them they cant do it bcuz its a civic. If parents were to buy a kid a porsche 911 turbo, who the hell are you to say he cant have it, you dont know how responsible the kid is, if it were me i would take it easy in 130,000 dollar car i dont know about u, but driving a porsche like a ricey civic is completely stupid if u ask me.
