Camaro driven: “Build it.”

05/16/2006, 9:38 AM

By admin

Yesterday, we highlighted a photo gallery from Detroit Free Press columnist Mark Phelan’s test drive of the Chevrolet Camaro Concept. Today, the newspaper published the full review with Phelan’s thoughts on the car after a 40 minute drive. There’s also a two minute video of the car in action. “Build it,” writes Phelan. “That’s all I can say after 40 minutes driving the ravishing Chevrolet Camaro concept car around General Motors Proving Grounds in Milford. The head-turning new sport coupe can’t hit the road soon enough.” He praised the perfectly tuned exhaust rumble, solid feel, and exterior design of the car. As we suspected, however, a “handle-with-care” mandate accompanied the test drive. Because the vehicle is a show car and not an actual prototype, we suspect a few doughnuts could result in reshaped chassis.

The Mustang’s designer was Vietnamese and that turned out pretty trick.

One of my transportation design profs was a former GM designer that drew up the ‘85+ Camero. So there ya have it. A CHINESE industrial designer drew up the famous American muscle-car. He worked on the ‘84 Vette too. Sadly, his last project before retiring was the Silhouette.

not that I don’t think it will be a great car but there is no way that even if it was, it would get a bad review. Here GM is nice enough to let you drive a highly anticipated car (also, that prototype is probably $1m bucks) and who in their right mind is going to write a bad review.

Ummm, these comments are weak. Who cares who designed it. It’s an American Icon…

I’m stoked someone was able to make it look awesome and I can’t wait to pick one up…

It’s 2006 people, wake up on the racist crap. It’s annoying.

They will only sell it if it can get 100k+ production a year. No way in hell will that be acheivable especially when you consider it will have the new mustang and challenger as competition. 60k maybe if they very lucky.

Currently ford sells about 140k mustangs but it is the only one in that category. They seem to also forget the high gas prices

The majority of Camaro buyers are Camaro fans. Camaro fans are NOT buying the mustang.

Well put Derek! I love every aspect of the Camaro. Mr./Mrs. Anonymous…check out an unbiased poll on Motortrend. http://www.motortrend.com/multimedia/polls/112_0603_pony_car_war_root/

Hmmmm…..that’s weird….looks to me like ….what is that 82% are rooting for the camaro and ….ewww only 17% for the Mustang. Keep in mind this is not a GM magazine…..That is just so strange…(I hope you are smart enough to sense the sarcasm)

Oh and the new Camaro has DOD and is flex fuel capable and is estimated to get more than 32 miles to the gallon highway. Flex fuel currently sells for less than $2.00 a gallon all over the US.

Sean, it says it does, please don’t tell me you think everything from concept’s going to make it to production. I’d love for this Camaro to finally open the Pony Car wars again but won’t be nearly as good as this concept. They have a long way to go before anything major happens.

Hey ppl! Calm down, the Camaro is made in canada anyway, technicly it isnt even domestic! My GF’s 2006 GT Pony; Engine Mexico, and car France! BTW her Pony is badass! And Im even a Camaro fan… The new Camaro is sweet! I will admit, it does need some work. But as other ppl have said it will change alot before it reaches production. Either way, I love it and I will get one or six! :D I am so exstatic that its coming back! Cannot wait! As for the whole ordeal on who is designing it; I think I should do it :P J/K. I dont care who designs it, I like whoever is on the designing team now, because they obviously like the Camaro!
