GM releases second Camaro image

01/11/2008, 1:44 PM

By Drew Johnson

General Motors has released another “official” image of a pre-production Chevrolet Camaro. The latest shots show the Camaro from the front three-quarters view. According to the site, “the new Camro is quickly evolving into final form,” although some details — such as the headlights — will likely change before production begins.

GM Chairman Bob Lutz recently announced that Camaro prototypes will no long wear camouflage. Apparently, the camouflage was interfering with the Camaro’s aerodynamics and cooling.

GM released a larger version of the original image, which reveals a bit more detail — including faux vents just in front of the rear wheels and a rear diffuser.

Chevrolet head Ed Peper also said that Camaro prototypes will continue testing in Australia and in the U.S., “so keep those camera phones ready.”

I don’t really think the Camaro can be realistically called retro. Aside from a couple interior design features and some VERY subtle exterior lines, it’s like nothing ever made before. It’s not like the Challenger, which was deliberately designed to look like something out of the 70s.

This segment for the US makers is going to be interesting again. It’s going to sell cars that will scratch a big itch with people. There are a lot of people that would rather not drive the boxes and asian coupes and maybe even some of the germans. They want a car they can afford that has some balls and grit. The only retro I see is the name. There is some reminiscence of 67 Camaro/Bird form, but it is far removed from original. In essence all cars are retro; you need 4 wheels, engine and trunk compartment and passenger compartments. Combination of those 4 things make a car. No one has more creativity then Italians in putting all bits together, albeit at the end their bits don’t comprise a solid car (but nice to look at).

TO settle the argument (or start a new one): by the time Camaro rolls of assembly line Ford may no longer exists.
And the second note: Camaro may not see light of day. If oil jumps another $10-15 up the market segment (teenagers) for this may not be able to afford to fill the tank on salary and 7-11 or Mcd, GM can drop production plans.
Another possibility it will be sold only in Middle East were price of gas is irrelevant: Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Emirates.

This car will do ok. Just ok though. It’s a Chevy Camaro, so that alone will take it plenty far in it’s sales potential. But, it’s coming so late in the “retro” era the domestics began with the Mustang. The Dodge Challenger is in the same boat. The novelty of “retro” has worn off, and if these companies are serious about selling cars, they’ll realize that people aged 45+ are the only ones who will really be enticed by the styling (in general) and that you don’t want old people buying your cars for the sake of the image of your performance vehicles.

By the way, the back end IS hideous. That HUGE plastic bumper and those atrocious tail lights make this thing such a pig. The cheesy fake wheel “vents” in the rear are also so contrived. The roof needs to be longer or something so that the C pillar doesn’t impact the truck lid so soon. The truck lid is too long and makes the car look more sedan-y than sports car like.

Just some input from a market analyst.

The LS3 in the Corvette makes 430 HP. If they do offer it from the factory, it would probably be as a limited edition model (call it a COPO?). Performance Engine: a detuned (for 87 octane) version of the 6.2L LS3 making 350 HP
Comment by global_lightning

A detuned LS2 makes 365hp (see Pontiac G8) and that’s basically a truck motor. An LS3 should produced considerably more even in a lesser tune (the Escalade’s motor is an 87 octane LS3 and that makes 400hp, so a Camaro LS3 should be no different).

The 02 Camaro and 02 Vette shared an identical LS1 powertrain. Camaro didn’t get access to the Awesome LS6 in the Z06 however.

My belief is that it will have a full-blown LS3 with the engine cover reading “Camaro” instead of Corvette (though leaving the ‘Vette engine cover on would be cool and I’d probably do it myself if it didn’t come that way).

01/07, 12:10 PM

Instead of over-thinking it too much, they should just offer three engines they already have: the 260-ish HP 3.6L V6, the 365-ish HP 6.0L L76 V8, and the 430HP 6.2L LS3 V8.

A V6, a regular-gas V8, and a premium-gas V8. That’s basically all bases covered for this kind of car. If a power war kicks off between Camaro and Challenger, they can worry about it then.

On a side note, I bet a Procharger kit for the 6.2L LS3 is just around the corner.

Tell me, did you order a double helping of retard sandwich today for lunch or just get really stoned during history class back in high school?

France did give material aid and support to their enemies enemy (that would be us), but not much else. It was nice, and did help some, but let’s not forget the self-serving reasons why they did it, and how much of a role they played. Even without their support I’m sure we would have eventually crushed the Brits in a few more years (something the French never did do… pussies). But, if the U.S. didn’t gain it’s freedom from the British crown, we’d all be under German rule right now anyway, so this is all a moot point, right?

Nine!?!?!

Fact is, France lost about 10 soldiers “helping” us during the revolutionary war, and we proceeded to pay them back during the 1940’s with about 450,000 of our soldiers lives (including a couple of my grand-uncles). So, any of y’all commenting from Europe… you’re f**king welcome.
