Camaro to receive 500 horsepower?

The new Camaro could receive a new 6.2 liter V8 with direct-injection boasting more than 450 horsepower, a new report says. The new engine will be based on GM’s existing all-aluminum Gen IV Vortec 6.2 liter V8 (L92) that powers the Cadillac Escalade.

According to Wards, the prototype engine is currently being tested in a Cadillac Escalade at GM’s proving grounds. One GM engineer claims the new engine is developing “well north” of 450 horsepower, a 10% increase in low-end torque, and still manages a 3-6% increase in fuel economy over the current engine.

The new engine features eight high-pressure injectors that feed fuel directly into the side of the combustion chamber at 2,250 pounds per square inch.

That sounds cool, but I’m afraid if that’s the ONLY V-8 engine, it’ll end up being a rich kid’s toy, just like the SSR did. I want a V-8 that I can buy for $26-$28K, not $40K.

they’ll probably come out with a 400hp engine and other engines to compete price-wise against the mustang

I’m sure the 5.3L will be available. It already receives 22mpg in a Tahoe. Trim at least a thousand pounds and plant it in a more aerodynamic body: 300hp + and 30mpg doesn’t seem so unrealistic. I think that that would make a good Z28 package.

I could picture some current Corvette owners pretty furious that their C6s are inferior to a Camaro. It’s a beautiful thing.

I just re-read the article. Is this purely speculation that the engine will be available in the Camaro? Seems to me (without reading the Wards report) that Cadillac is only experimenting with a more powerful Escalade.

Actaully I heard they were going to make the 427 out of the Z06 available in the Camaro, so thats 505 horse power. However this new motor sounds more interesting and high tech if its making that kind of power and improved gas milage as well… Hopefully they will test the hell out of it as it won’t be a feature if the motors need to be recalled after 6 months or something.. That direct port fuel injection makes a LOT of power in the 4 bangers so its about time they tried it in a big V 8…… I’d still like to see an all aluminum version of the 502 create motor injected as an option in the camaro like they did back in the 60’s with hte ZL-1 aluminum block option.. That would be SWEET…..

I love how GM is managing to make their engines more powerful and give them an increase in fuel economy at the same time.

GM has been very careful as of late to keep an eye on the CAFE standards. They may come out with a whopper of an engine for bragging rights, but most will likely be built to be more fuel efficient.

CTS, Britain has no auto industry to speak off: former PAG from Ford (US) Mini/Morris - BMW, Ford - ford, Vauxhaul - GM, and bunch of Jap factories building Honda and Nissans for Europe.

Germany allows everyone to sell in its own market. Since they believe that they are CAR super race they can not discriminate and they don’t (I think everybody has a piece of their market).

Italy dropped it’s taxing of foreign cars in order to join EU (to pleasure of Germany and France) and as a result Japanese and Koreans are dominating sales (FIat sells less then 30%). In the past year FIAT started gaining ground with descent cars courtesy of GM’s 2 billion bailout tax.

In short: check your facts. GotHandling? has a point and a witty one.
