If you’re a Camaro fan, you might want to look away. This one is gonna sting a little — or a lot. Put simply, there will be no Z28 Camaro. That’s right: the program has been given the axe.
Â
Rumors started making the rounds on Tuesday of this week about the uber-Camaro’s demise. After doing some checking around with very well placed sources, we’re afraid those initial rumblings are true.Â
The Z/28 was set to feature the fire-breathing LS8 motor. A 6.2L, small block V8 with a roots-style supercharger that was supposed to be good for 500 to 550 horsepower. With the Z28 put out to pasture, the SS model will now be the top dog. In the Camaro Super Sport’s engine cradle, you’ll find the LS3 V8 rated somewhere in the 400 to 450 hp neighborhood.Â
Normally this is where we’d speculate on the reason for this move by GM, though, do we even have to say it?Â
Current National Average for premium unleaded: $4.507.

“Dead” is an overstatement — “shelved” is more accurate. Dead means permanent, but the Z28 can always be brought back when market conditions warrant.

Wow looks like my souces were right. They said there was going to be a Z28 with the LSA, and eventually new of it broke out… Well at least I know I can trust my sources…
But hearing this… Oh well. If the market was different, and if gas prices weren’t how they were this would have definitely been given the green light.

Even the idiots running GM these days are not stupid enough to not bring out a Z28. What happened? Did they not think they could get enough copies of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s greatest hits to fill the glove boxes of these new camaro’s? It was bad enough GM decided not to put T-Tops in this generation of Camaro….but no Z28….are they insane? The next head line on LLN will be no life time supply of Bud Light with the purchase of a new Camaro; then the car will be relegated to just being a rental car.

This is simply a reaction by GM to the constantly changing
market that is being forced driven by the high price of fuel.
This trend will continue with all manufacturers and all drivers
will have to downsize to new realities of high fuel and a 35MPG
CAFE standard. In other words…stay tuned…more to come.

Well that settles it. Now I get a new crotch rocket. I’m not going to lay out a bunch of cash for an SS, only to have them come out with a real hot Z28 a few years later. It’s happened to me before. Oh well, the bike goes zero to 60 in less than 3 seconds. That’ll just have to do…

People who purchase or are in the market for the model with the S/C 6.2L V8 aren’t (or shouldn’t be) worried about gas prices. They should release the Z28 (or whatever they’re going to call the model with the S/C 6.2L V8) but charge a higher premium for it. Instead of a base price of $45k-$50k, they should start pricing at $60k-$75k. The baby boomers will buy it, but just make sure to slather leather all over the interior like the upgraded interior package offered on the Corvette. GM: This is a way to make even more money off the Camaro. Target the baby boomers who f’d over generations X and Y.
The execs at GM are idiots. There’s a reason why their US business is in a steep dive. The Camaro should’ve already been out. I want the new Camaro, but I hope it flops to teach the GM execs a lesson.

I dont think the performance meets the hype. Quite dissapointing GM but what else is new, right? You still have the volt and cruze coming HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Well it sort of makes sense in a way…you would have 3 coupes with the same engine…Corvette, The CTS coupe V and then the Camaro. Maybe it was more that just cost and fuel in this case, possible they could not produce enough of these motors to support all 3 cars…just a thought.

to crackerhemi GM has the 2 mode hybrid that is suppose to be doing very well and the entire layout of the system is genius(excluding the engine) so yes that system should be able to boost the stock up couple dollars unfortunatly its not being recognized enough thanks to honda and toyota. So, 400horseSS i would hold on to those stock if u hav a lot i would take some out but definetly keep some in ther. sorry for the lack of commas

Ok well I’m not too sure that the Camaro Z28 is dead now… It still shows that there’s two V8 engines in the Camaro’s production schedule… The 6.2L V8 LS3, and then there’s still another 6.2L V8 codenamed the” L99″ So that has to still be the LSA right? I don’t know what the “L99″ is but it’s a 6.2L V8… So I don’t know…

Why the hell is anyone worried there is no Z28? Come on, the last gen Z28 had only 280hp for a 5.7l V8, then it was bumped to like 305 before it died out. It also was so pathetic that the 4 speed auto was standard on a vehicle like that.
Damn, it has just as much hp as the old Viper. Why is it that no one realizes how stupid they sound when OMG it only has 400-450hp?
If you want the LS8 engine, get a Corvette. It is quite sad that the only reason the Camaro exists is due to the retro Mustang.
Look, I know you have to pass Grampa in his Toyota Avalon, but jeez.
