A new trial of speed cameras has begun on stretch of Loop 101 near Scottsdale, Arizona. On Sunday — the day the cameras were switched on — between 1,000 and 2,000 motorists were photographers for exceeding the 65 mph speed limit by 11 miles or more. For the next month, warning letters will be sent out. After that, they will be issued citations averaging $157. Scottsdale received permission from the Arizona Department of Transportation to operate a nine-month program to determine whether the cameras reduce collisions.
