Japanese automaker Toyota is considering building an engine and transmission plant in the United States, possibly in Michigan, according to a report published today. Slated for construction in the next three years, the plant is apparently designed to reduce friction between Japan and the U.S. caused by growing unemployment among American autoworkers. Michigan — home to GM and Ford — would be the likely location for the plant, due to its geographical and symbolic importance to the U.S. auto industry.
