FACT: Korean streets are NOT like the US and CANADA. There are very limited parking and etc. for huge boats like DODGE AND CROWN VICTORIA crap. So selling 100 of these cars there probably filled up the whole city of Seoul.

Problem with CANADA was letting all the Chinese into the country and take over. Now go weep over that fact.

What's unfair is the trade between US/Can and these Asian countries. I'm happy to hear Ontario is considering this.

Hey I love Canada, everytime I go up there I have the greatest time, and its a good place to make money (in my business) but this is stupid for the government up there to ban Korean cars. That would be like Hawaii getting pissed off at Alaska for not buying any of their sandals and beach wear. If you want to sell cars in the Asian market, start building cars that will be appealing to that market. Whining and complaining that the Koreans are being unfair is childish and unfair. This buzz guy is a parasite to the north american auto industry. Always demanding more pay for the workers causing domestic cars to get more expensive, and less appealing to buy. Get rid of Unions period!

You can't force another country to buy cars that are not designed for their markets. Maybe north america should start building smaller and more effecient cars that would appeal to markets where streets and cities are more dense and gas is much more expensive. You want Koreans to start buying V8 Cargers and Camaros? I have great respect for Canada as a nation, but I think they are being a bit unfair towards the Koreans. Also Hyundai builds most of the worlds oil tankers shipping oil to us, so Hyundai can say ok, you don't want our cars, I guess you don't want our korean made ships bringing you oil and manufactured goods from the rest of the world.

People, when I read the comments below ... get a life or go back to school ( not all ). Ontario, Canada produces more Trucks and Cars then any other place in North America. The quality of the product is the same as any other manufacturing plant..any place. It takes good engineering, good parts and good quality control in order to build a good vehicle. The other thing is "Domestic" > Can you help me out with this ? Toyota, Honda has facility in Ontario producing the same number of vehicles as the "old domestic" OEMs. Last point, Free market Economy yes, but not for cars that cost less then $3K ... only China or India can making build that so inexpensive due to cheap labour cost. On the other hand, how about T-shirt from W-M for $3 -- made in India. Do we have Canadians making them ? Eh

Canada shouldd be embarassed for buying that many crappy korean cars!
Losing auto jobs has been all over the press and the weakening U.S./Can economies has every body freaked. So this blow hard is doing some grandstanding. On one level good for him for standing up if its true that there are uneven trade rules between canada and Korea. Foreign countries often make it hard for foreign competition to get a foot hold just ask anyone who has ever tried to deal with the distribution networks in Japan to distribute their product.
On the other hand he is just reading the polls and putting out some sound bites.

A good lesson from Canada. We allow everybody to import their vehicle here called them bullet proof and exciting and call almost everythink that we make crap. Well guess what? We are going to import their poverty life style soon. Global compitition is great or we would still be getting crap from our big 3, but it need control.

Axehead, you have a point... Hondas made in Alliston and Toyotas made in Cambridge ON consistently rank as high or higher than their Japanese made counterparts. It would be interesting to see the quality rankings on Hyundais made in Bromont Quebec.

It has been discussed on this forum before... the perceived quality gap between North American vehicles and their counterparts. It is not the fault of the workers (well, in some cases anyway) but the cost cutting that has gone into the design and engineering of the vehicles.

Either way, Dalton is standing up for the economy of Ontario, and good on him for doing so. As for our friends to the South.. with this being an election year, perhaps you need to remember Bill Clinton's old line; "It's the economy, stupid!"

Guys this is stupid. Canada imports decent cars, like the entire Kia and Hyundai lineup, but expects South Korea, a world-class auto manufacturing nation, to buy CROWN VICS AND DODGE CHARGERS in return?
Comment by DeansterTJ

There ain't a vehicle in Kia/Hyundai's stable than can outlast the Crown Vic or absorb the abuse it takes. After a Vic finishes service as a squad car, its used as a taxi. There are service Crown Vics out there with 300,000+ miles on them. Just because something isn't new tech, doesn't mean it isn't durable and reliable. Often times the older way of doing things is better in that regard. BOF will always be superior to unit body in terms of reliability and durability. Why do you think police continue to use it despite competition from the Impala, Intrepid and now Charger?

There ain't a Hyundai vehicle that can run with the Charger on the track or dragstrip.

Autonut, Canada = terrorist haven? What have you been smoking. Canada is one of the most peaceful and friendly places on earth. I go fishing up there often and they're always friendly and welcoming.

My kudos to Ontario for standing up to this. We should tax the bejesus out of Toyota, Honda, etc to give domestic manufactures an advantage. Its better for the economy. Ask Japan, they do it.

DeansterTJ, your a dickhead.

This is about being fair, not about quality of vehicles. Canada is recognized world wide for building quality vehicles, that's why they build them here.

Goof.

dmanero: you represent the one element I fail to understand about those who post on this site. What does a person's sexuality have anything to do with an automotive forum such as this. Not that it's any of your business, but I have been married to the same fantastic woman for 16 years and we have a son in college and a daughter in high school. So please enlighten me. How in the hell you managed to deduce from a series of posts on Korean imports, vehicles produced in Canada, or jobs being created or lost based on one country's economic predicament, that I have homosexual tendencies?

"I am from tolerant part of US, I just never heard of gay guy being interested in automotive affairs." That's an interesting statement autonut. Perhaps you weren't aware that the previous editor of Car and Driver was gay? As are a lot of automotive enthusiasts! :)

But I do have to wonder what's up with all the kids on here slagging others as gay . . .

Grow up guys.

Deanster, very impressive post! My first reaction was like everyone else's "Screw Koreans!". But reality is that only consumer get punished. Hyundai will not get punished: Sonata is made in US and it can not be blocked in Ontario per North American Agreement. Accent is made in Korea and some poor bastard will not be able to buy a new car, but instead will have to drive a used one or smaller Japanese. How many Canadians cars were sold in Japan? Germany?

I also agree with jhnnycanuck about immigrants: Canada is heaven for terrorist and something needs to be done with that.

yeah, DeansterTJ because now the Korean cars are far superior and far more popular vehicles right?

It's kinda hard when we have literally no trade restrictions with most foreign imports, yet the tarriff rates at foreign countries is so high that it's what discourages foreign customers from buying our products. How fair is that? I'm glad Ontario is stepping up on this.

114,000 units versus 100 units - yeah, that's slightly lopsided.

Got nothing against Korean cars but go for it, Canada. North America has been taking it up the ass for a long time being on the receiving end of anything and everything other regions dump on us while prtotecting their home turfs. Gets a little annoying after a while.

Fairlight: actually the cost to produce- today- is about exactly the same since the dollars are so close right now. There may be additional transport costs, but since most of the plants are so close to the border anyway and we are free trade partners it's probably negligible.

Also, what you say about it being a national pastime to slag Americans probably held more water in the past than it does now. I'm afraid the good citizens of dear sweet Canada, land of tolerance and racial equality, are not so enamoured with each other as it may appear looking in.

Anyway, glad we can choose to disagree without resorting to the mindless insults certain other members of our LLN community feel necessary to resort to. And have fun at the Super Bowl. Go Eli and the Giants!

yeah my thoughts exactly ZO6ified, Good for the province of Ontario, I'd say Canada has more balls then the U.S does with their economy. They aren't afraid to take the heat and do a little threatening to foreign manufacturers, But the U.S would never threaten a foreign country as long as it is spending money $ in the U.S. Even though they are making it impossible for U.S exports to sell in their country with insane tariff rates. In fact I'll even go further and say that with taking steps like these will obviously help Ontario's and Canada's economy they may also be helping our domestic auto companies. I'm sorry the CAW got screwed once again.
