Canada is testing a system that combines onboard GPS with a digital speed limit map to force cars to travel at the limit. “We are trying to assess the operational acceptance issues,” says Peter Burns of Transport Canada’s road safety directorate. The Leftlane Perspective: It’s unlikely governments would ever want to give up the revenue from speeding tickets. At least in Britain, the equally Orwellian proliferation of speed cameras makes the government more money, rather than eliminating a revenue stream entirely.
