American officials seem to be about as well-versed as this guy when it comes to cars. The general consensus is that any car that isn’t bone stock MUST be used for racing on public roads, that there is no other reason to modify a car in any way, but this doesn’t count if it’s “classic American muscle.” They’re all working under the “guilty until proven guilty” mantra that seems to be so popular nowadays.

Note: I have nothing against aforementioned “classic American muscle,” it’s just that autorities seem to be playing the stereotypes.

I find it amazing that these draconian laws are so easily passed. The idea that all cars are modified for the sole purpose of street racing is so absurd that it’s hard to put into words. The customization of automobiles is, for many, more about personal reflection than it is about racing on the streets and killing someone. It’s even more scary when one thinks that you can buy many stock cars that are faster than these modified Civics and Eclipse’s. A V6 Toyota Camry runs the quarter mile in less than 15 seconds, thats faster than many “performance” cars of the early 90’s. When you can buy a family sedan with 300+ hp stock how do you justify going after only the people with fart cans and supposed CAI’s on 2.0L straight fours pushing at most 200 to the wheels.

The world is becoming such a fear driven place that eventually we’re going to reduce our personal rights to mere shadows of their former selves in a futile attempt to stop crime, get rid of drugs, and prevent deaths from occurring. I’m all for keeping the public at large safe, but at what cost are we going to finally say enough is enough? How long are we going to let a few rotten apples spoil the fun for everyone else? the vast majority of car enthusiast are responsible people that like to have something unique as opposed to your silver Accord or beige Camry like everyone else, we aren’t criminals dammit so stop treating us like we are.

They claim that we should take it to the track, but the closest affordable track to me is almost 2 hours away. The only other one even remotely close is Mid-Ohio and most people probably don’t even know it exists. How are we supposed to take it to the track when we don’t have one close by, can’t afford to, or simply just don’t have the time to drive 2 hours for 12 seconds of track time. Heck, they’ve been trying to shut down Road Atlanta for years, so what are people in Georgia supposed to do if that ever happens? I don’t street race and I don’t condone it, but at least make alternative avenues available to people before crushing their dreams.

Sigh, people that know nothing about the subject they’re dictating shouldn’t be allowed to be put in charge.

ok what about a responsible racer with a modified daily driver that only goes fast at the track. what about a car that comes from the factory with 500 to 1000 horsepower, look at streetfire; ferarris, and lamborghinis street race all day long too, will they ban the sale of bugattis and porsches in ontario?

with that being said i do understand what they are trying to do….stop young people from killing themselves and others. anybody that dont think streetracing those little fart cars is a problem is crazy. I live in so cal and see exotics and sports cars obeying every road rule out there (sometimes driving 58 in a 65 zone), and see crappy loud ricers (foreign and domestic)weaving through traffic at 100+ mph.

Damn… I just KNEW my car’s diminutize little engine would turn into a dangerous explosive device as soon as I changed to a performance muffler! I should have listened before it was too late.

I really really hope this man Bryant loses support as a result of these very extreme measures. Any car I own will be modified within the confines of emissions laws as I see fit and I do not race on the street to get the enjoyment I want from my vehicles.

And I know that pit bulls can be extremely dangerous. Most people shouldn’t have them unless they’re a licensed breeder, but banning them outright?

I agree with LP640. This guy is watching far more Initial D, 2F2F and way too many police chase videos than do most enthusiasts who just want their cars to be interesting.

I wonder if they’ll target people with VW’s and Japanese cars and largely turn a blind eye to all of the Mustangs, Camaros, Corvettes, Buicks, Chryslers and nearly every older muscle car which was *built from the factory* for street and drag racing. I’m sure you’d have to look VERY HARD to find a Mustang or Camaro that’s been modified with speed parts.

It is not the cars that are dangerous, only the racing. The Cnadians will just race stock cars. They should take peoples driving licences, not their cars. What if someone owns a modified car for racing on tracks? IDIOTS.

I’m in step with Kenny W. I thought that we lived in a meritocracy based democracy where people are judged for their actions rather than presumption and stereotypes. What this guy is trying to do is establish a form of discrimination. If you have a problem with street racing, go after those individuals that are participating, not someone who happens to have a car that can go fast. Bryant rationalizes his desire in destroying someone’s personal property without just cause. His sensationalist analogy comparing cars to explosives is clearly meant to rouse the ignorant masses rather to appeal to those that think and reason. Explosives are illegal; cars are not.

So by that (dumb ass) rationale, any country that adds one more item to their military should automatically be seen as an enemy since the only purpose of the military is to kill. Yeah, I’m looking at you Canada!

His statement is in response to the recent deaths of people on Ontario’s highways, that were killed when thier vehicles were slammed into by kids who were street racing. the most recent being a trucker killed when he was hit by two 17 year olds. Unfortunately many modified cars are like Pit Bulls, there is a great attraction to own them by those who are the least capable of handling them. Just my thoughts…

The media makes it sound like here in ontario we have street races like something out of the fast and the furious, when its really young drivers who have no idea how a car will handle or react at high speeds. Unfortunately it usually ends in tragedy and brings about stupid law proposals like these.

Secondly, around where I live (Toronto) majority of the poor excuse of modified cars are chopped springs and oversize exhaust tips. Now they think they’re fast. no real performance upgrades or upgrades that will enhance the handling. and again majority of these cars are owned by 16 - 23 middle eastern immigrates. So now we have kids racing around in unstable cars.

You can never stop street racing, but if you want to slow it down, boost the starting age for a driver to 21. Have the police stop hassling drivers who have custom cars by stopping them every other day. and lastly give us the use of a track closure to our location.

Oh but I forgot CANADA is now RUN by communists, hey Bush do a smart thing and send a nuke towards Canada or better yet make it a 51st State.

As a Canadian citizen (thank god in the sensible political province of alberta) it is absolutely appauling that a politician can step out without justification and make up a policy in which they can seize your property for modifying that property for the purpose of “street Racing” Ontario is the most liberal province in the country and therefore have way too much legislation, however it is against the canadian charter of rights and freedoms to seize property in the manner of which is being discussed, plain and simple. If only people were to wake up and realize that left on the political spectrum just does not work, then our country would be a much better place to live.
