With winter weather affecting many parts of the United States and Canada this weekend, the first thing on your mind might not be getting new summer rubber for your sports car. But the folks at Car and Driver have posted a detailed comparison of 11 big name street tires for summer use. The rubber comparo is the first of its kind from the auto magazine since 1989. “Testing tires is a difficult job,” says reviewer Larry Webster. “But tires are a most critical part of your car, your only connection to the road.” In the end, first place goes to the $145 Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3. “As an all-around high-performance tire, you can’t beat this Goodyear. It was the best performer in all three wet-track tests and was very competent in the dry,” writes Webster. “It generated 0.94 g on the dry skidpad, only 0.01 g off the first-place BFGoodrich and tied with the Yokohama and Hankook. The Goodyear gripped so well that you might not have been certain the road was wet, and it lost traction in a gentle, predictable manner.”
