In its October issue, Car and Driver explains to readers how to perform a burnout using a manual transmission. While this information may be useful to driving enthusiasts transitioning from an automatic to manual transmission, the guide seems otherwise inappropriate, given the potential for transmission damage. Concerns aside, the instructions are rather straightforward: depress the clutch and shift into first; put your right foot on the gas pedal an rev up to 4,000-5,000rpm; drop the clutch and softly touch the brake; vary the pressure of the brake pedal and throttle until the tires are smoking and the car is standing still. Of course, we do not endorse performing this stunt anywhere. You could destroy your clutch or worse, and someone could get injured if things go awry.
