Cars of the billionaires

03/01/2006, 6:28 PM

By admin

Forbes has compiled a list of the top ten cars owned by some of the most famous billionaires. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates drives a seven-year-old 1999 Porsche 911 Convertible and a 1988 Porsche 959 Coupe. The other half of the Microsoft duo, Paul Allen, also drives a 1988 Porsche 959 Coupe, as well as a 1988 Mazda B-Series Pickup. Another Microsoft billionaire, Steve Ballmer, drives a 1998 Lincoln Continental. The considerably more hip Lawrence Ellison — also a tech geek and founder of Oracle — drives a 2006 Bentley Flying Spur. Michael Dell has a Porsche Boxster and Hummer H2. Warren Buffett’s license place — which reads “Thrifty” — adequately describes his choice of a 2001 Lincoln Town Car. Ikea’s founder Ingvar Kamprad stays true to his Swedish heritage, and drives a 1993 Volvo 240 G L wagon. Perhaps Kamprad should ask Volvo to sell him the slightly more stately VCC Concept. Failing that, we’re sure he could acquire the whole company using part of his $23 billion net worth. Luckily, at least one billionaire in the list knows how to pick his vehicles. Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Alsaud has two Rolls-Royce Phantoms, two Infiniti FX45s, two Hummer H1s, and two Volvo XC90s.

I guess that’s why they’re billionaires……they save their money. Although I think Bill Gates and Paul Allen couldn’t have made a more awesome retro supercar choice. The 959 was and still is an amazing display of engineering prowess.
