The CAW’s contract with the Big 3 isn’t up for about another five months, but the UAW’s Canadian counterpart has already reached a preliminary agreement with Ford , a new report finds. The tentative agreement is a three year deal that wouldn’t see any changes to base pay.
Unlike the UAW’s agreement with Ford, the CAW’s deal does not include a two-tier wage system and new hires will still have a benefits package, according to Automotive News. However, the CAW did agree to a three-year “grow in” wage and benefit structure that will see new hires start at 70 percent of current compensation levels.
Earlier this year, the CAW said that it would not accept a two-tier wage system, something the UAW agreed to during negotiations last fall.
The new agreement will also see Ford ’s St. Thomas, Ontario assembly plant stay open until the new contract expires in September of 2011. The St. Thomas plant produces the Ford Crown Victoria, Lincoln Town Car and Mercury Grand Marquis.
