CAW to begin contract talks with GM on Thursday

05/06/2008, 11:15 AM

By Drew Johnson

The Canadian Auto Workers still have about five months until their contract with the Big Three is up, but the CAW is trying to get all three deals hammered out long before the fall deadline. The CAW inked a new three-year deal with Ford on Sunday and is now hoping for similar deals with General Motors and Chrysler.

Following the deal with Ford, CAW president Buzz Hargrove announced on Monday that the CAW will be sitting down with GM on Thursday. Hargrove is expecting that both GM and Chrysler will agree to a deal similar to the Ford agreement.

Unlike the UAW, the CAW is taking a hard stand against a two-tier wage system and decreased union benefits. The deal with Ford did not include the two-tier system and kept worker benefits — although it did include a phase-in period for new workers.

Any excuse for a double Tekillme is fine with me. It’s the little voice inside my head that wants a second round I have a problem with.

Well in the past it was corporate stupidity that knew no borders, now that we crossed that obstacle and union stupidity joined the party.
