Moving downmarket is becoming a fact of life for all car makers it seems. Even Porsche *had* to do it with the Boxster, which although is a GREAT car, was widely criticized when it first came out, especially because it rehashed much of the 911 styling. Some people say that Mercedes and BMW have/will watered down their marques by putting out models under $30k. But, the reality is volume is $, so if they can use engines and chassis already developed in other markets, why not expand.

I’d like to see some of Commodore’s sources, because everything I’ve heard was that Bugatti was bleeding money and will never earn money. I don’t think that it’s millions per car, but I also don’t think it’s as simple as just selling cars until the R&D and production costs are paid for–Bugatti likely has very specific agreements with parts suppliers, etc., so they probably know now–and probably before the first one rolled off the line–how many Veyrons will be built.

With that engine though, I think it would be a mistake for Bugatti to not go downmarket (at least some).

No, it’s not so good at all. It’s a hugely inefficient vehicle which gets even more so when you take a look under the hood. 10 radiators just to cool the damn thing? You’ve got to be kidding me. That’s just one example. I can play this game all day long but sadly for you I don’t have all the time in the world to waste discussing this atrocious car.

Assuming by “baby” you mean the Veyron, No Bugatti doesn’t lose a few million per “baby”. They make money on them actually (as long as they sell enough of them to break even and from then onwards they make money on every car)

It doesn’t suprise me- as the current Bugatti Veyron is, it sure is an image builder, but the problem is they loose a few million dollars per baby. A smaller Bugatti might narrow those loses, but I would guess that Bugattis still going to be loosing money on the chassis alone.

It’l be interesting to see what a $2M car will look like. But I am a bit disheartened that Bugatti isn’t going to produce a smaller car. But whatever.
