Chery rising: A look at China’s latest automotive efforts

07/31/2006, 6:42 PM

By admin

Chery Automobile — a Chinese automaker whose cars will be sold under the Visionary Vehicles nameplate in North America — is hard at work on a number of new vehicles that could eventually find their way to the U.S. market. In recent days, a number of photos leaked online showing new prototypes and mockups for forthcoming models from the carmaker. Details on the cars still remain sparse, but the developments are nonetheless interesting. After the jump, you’ll find images of a Chery SUV, Sedan, and Coupe…

Chinese costs are rising too quickly for them to be able to compete on price so it is difficult to see where the advantage to buying a Chinese car will lie. Wouldn’t you rather have Korean or Japanese if the prices were the same?

So basically what ur saying is GM is copying chinese cars … Chery umm isn’t that kinda close to CHEVY. Also, chinese cars suck especially the newer ones. Cadillac’s quality is so much higher and as far as pricing goes Chrysler is where it’s at so yeah i agree with all the ppl saying that we should stop importing cars from asia.

For those consumers looking for a reliable, inexpensive car, a used car is a good way to go… especially since most manufacturers now offer warranty on their Certified Used products. Probably the same price as a new Chery car and much more reliable.

Plus you don’t have to say “I’m driving a Chery”
“Don’t you mean a Chevy?”
“No… it’s a Chery… like on your sundae… but spelled with just one R”
“Oh…”

The first and the third picture looks bad. The second picture(coupe) looks interesting. I’ve heard that the upstart Chinese carmakers go to well known IItalian design houses for consultation and design maybe GM should do the same thing.

#45 what is the Chinese makers USP that will make us buy their cars?
Cost? Nope by the time the cars arrive here the prices will be the same as Korean or Japanese cars
Styling? from what I have seen it aint that great.
Heritage? Nope they aint got that either
World Class Engineering? Nope Nix on that one too
Quality? we’ll have to see but I doubt it.
The only way the Chinese can offer a USP to Americans is with the sales and after-sales package and if they come up with a brilliant one it will be copied by everyone else.
Gas Mileage? I can get great mileage with a proven Japanese Korean or European car

I’m not being racist, but apart from cost I see no reason to buy CHinese, and with costs rising really quickly in China that advantage is going to disappear. Maybe I will wait for the Indian or Malaysian sales invasion

obviously none of you have been to china….land of the corporate logo knockoffs..i mean come on, do they think people will seriously think that SUV is an infiniti? knocking off clothes and shoes is one thing, knocking off cars is completely different. i doubt it will do well…

They’ve got to stop using jap design firms to design their cars. If you’re wondering why they all look like jap cars, that’s because they are probably all designed by the same people.

Stupid Asain cars. Japanese cars already suck but imagine how crappy a chinese (notice the lack of capitals for lack of respect for the chinese) car would be. In a crash the doors would fall off, the wheels would fall off, the engine would explode and the occupants would die. The crap ching chong junk from china would be rubbish. Why would you be stupid enough to buy a chinese car. Man if I saw you driving down the road in a chinese car I would egg your car.
