Chinese automaker Chery is planning to produce a luxury sedan. Codenamed “F11,” the sedan could bow as early as 2009. However, the car will not be sold under the Chery brand. Engine choices for the F11 will include a 3.0 liter V6 and a 4.2 liter V8, both designed by Austria’s engine manufacturer AVL.
According to Shanghai Securities News, the car will be named Xuanyuan in China and will compete with Lexus, Infiniti, Audi and BMW.
Chery has yet to confirm the report.

Why do luxury cars always have to look like an old man’s car?

Maximus, old man are the target buyer. They do have the money. Rich young man will buy Maseratti, Ferrari, Lambo & other exotics.

Ditto. Old rich guys buy Maybachs, RR… the sportiest thing I’ve seen they drive is the Continental GT and he owns about US$3.5 billion. Rich young man may be worth about 2-3 million and they’d be buying Ferraris and Lambos.
Anyway, regarding the Chery luxury division, it’s better off if they copy everything from luxury brands like MB or BMW. If they take the chassis from the S Class, add some actual high quality leather, outsource the engine, and hire Pininfarina for the styling, slapstick a very cheap price, it could work. For the next gen, once they’ve learned how to copy whatever they have not, like the engine, then they can copy those too and give it an even lower sticker price. Regardless Chery is making a xxxxload of money even if it hasn’t penetrated US yet. I’d say let the other countries provide them with research budget and once they can actually make a safe decent car they can break the US market with some really cheap vehicles. A cheaper alternative to the koreans is always welcome.

I don’t like the design – not that it was actually designed in China. It also steals elements from the Chinese Buick LaCrosse which doesn’t surprise me AT ALL.

The next bit in the article should read:
Cherry, as all Chinese car makers do, will use the design cues from Mercedes, Lexus, BMW, Bentley, including a range of many other (if not all) luxury car makers in the market. They will then sell the car for the price of one of the wheels on these luxury cars.
I do hope they burn in hell, along with all other Chinese car makers. This car will probably fall to pieces when it crashes anyway so rich Chinese execs (or not so rich since they need to buy this) should stay away from it. It could save a life

Lets see. I’m in the market for a big, expensive luxury car. I could have a Lexus LS, an Audi A8 (classy), a Merc S-class (amazing in every way), a BMW 7-Series (dynamic). Which to choose? Hang on, screw them, I want a Chery!

No one will mistake that for an Oriental Luxury design. But I do have to admit, and likely agree with some, that my first impression was “Rolls-Royce”. But also mid to late 1980s CHRYSLER Imperial, which was not a bad looking car, but was a touch odd looking.
The design is too polarizing for US markets. But could do well in CHINA and the rest of the Orient, if CHINA can get past those nagging quality issues.

I agree, and more; they are under cutting our prices, we are loosing jobs, are being poisoned in more ways than one. (pet food, toys, other untested products yet to be found)
China is also one of the worst pollutants of environment, air, water, in which they grow and make products for export, for us to eat, wear and use.
I am so sick and tired of sub-standard products from China I go out of my way not to buy “Made in China†and I will gladly pay 2 or 3 times for a quality products that are made in Europe or North America !
Not to mention that they have no human rights for their own people, thousands die in factory accidents.
“Made in China†NO THANKS !!!

I really like the effort that Chery is putting into thier cars. As if they really had a choice. But, it reminds me of Hyundai whom in fact is progressing beautifully. Hyundai’s Genesis has everyone, including its critics, on the edge of thier seats. Aside from Chery’s best traits my biggest negative issue with them is thier brakes. Every model has poor, outdated braking systems. Including thier large cars consisting of drums on the rear wheels. China’s roadways may not necessitate excellent braking performance, however I am speaking to a committy of auto enthusiests and I think we can all agree that having great brakes puts a smile on the face.

Chinese used to have an executive brand called Red Flag Brand and the top government officials used it. It was named after the Chinese flag of course, but it is ironic that I see red flags all over Chinese cars.
