    By Mark Kleis

The upcoming Chevrolet Aveo hatchback replacement has been thoroughly photographed by our spies, but now we have obtained a pair of patent images as well, giving an even better idea of what the production model will look like.

Chevrolet’s Aveo is long due for a thorough reworking, and thanks to Automarket, we now have a sneak peak of the next Aveo hatchback. We also managed to get our hands on some never-before-seen Aveo sedan images, which can be viewed here.

Based on what we can tell from the patent and spy images, the car will essentially be a lightly toned-down version of the Aveo RS show car that debuted earlier this year.

Chevrolet is targeting a more upscale market for the replacement Aveo since it hopes the Spark will take over for its entry-level models. Unlike the current Chevrolet small car lineup, which consists only of the Aveo and Cobalt, by the end of 2011, Chevrolet will offer the entry-level Spark hatchback, an Aveo in both five-door and four-door sedan configurations and the conventional four-door Cruze.

This all new Aveo will ride on GM’s Global Gamma II chassis and will likely go into production later this year at the automaker’s Orion Township, Michigan, assembly plant. In addition to the more aggressive look, the Aveo will receive a much more upscale interior than the current model and more powerful, refined powertrains under its hood. The base engine will likely be a naturally aspirated 1.4-liter four-cylinder capable of 40 mpg, the same unit that will also see duty in the Cruze.

Details are still blurry as to when, but we are told to expect an Aveo with an optional turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder unit with over 140 horsepower appearing for the Aveo RS.

aveu? After you make a car an introduction model you can’t make it cool. If you shoved 300 horse’s in a yaris it wouldn’t be cool it’d be a yaris if you made the accent run a 1/4 in 12 seconds it’d still be the ugly hyundai accent. I think they’re targeting the toyota matrix with this one unlike the pontiac vibe which was a toyota matrix i think this is to be the new competition (with more horsepower.)

This car is a competitor for Yaris and Fit.This is a good bit smaller than the Matrix.

It looks pissed too. I mean, since 99.9% of drivers will not have a johnson, you’d think they would make it more friendly looking ala Mazda3 or VW Beetle.

Why bother with the covers anyhow? Not as if anyone is interested in looking at it, let alone copying it.

Oh, and just what it needs, a turbo engine and all the maintenance and ills that go with it on the cheapest car segment. Good thinking there GM/Daewoo.

Nice appliance. I hope it sells well enough to offset the new Buicks that are going to step all over Cadillac.

i like the more aggressive look of the show car, tbh…dalmatian isn’t the best style for this thing, for sure…

gotta say, tho, sprockkets, i think you’re off your rocker on the turbo thing…everything is going turbo these days, and they’re not as unreliable as they used to be…

When turbos don’t need to be oil cooled due to their extreme temperatures is when they become reliable. Let me know of any turbo’s that fit that description.

sprockkets, as I’m sure you know the biggest difference between today’s turbos and those of yore is that the engines themselves are now designed from the ground up to accommodate the boost.

I like this car and for once agree with Doc… the RS could be fun.

      sprockkets161 days ago

if that is the case then Johny then they wouldn’t make the engine out of aluminum

I’m no engineer sprockkets but GM as an example has a lot riding on this 1.4l… it’s in at least 3 models that I can think of including the Volt. I have to believe they’ve taken that into account.

      sprockkets161 days ago

just to clarify, I’m not saying turbo engines are like lemons, but let’s face it: most never bother to do routine maintenance on their cars, especially the bottom feeders, which make the situation worse. Most never stop and think that turbo cars either need fully synthetic oil or more frequent oil changes + allowing the turbo to cool at idle for at least a minute so as to allow it to cool down.

“When turbos don’t need to be oil cooled due to their extreme temperatures is when they become reliable. Let me know of any turbo’s that fit that description.”

Any Mitsubishi turbo built in the last 20 years, any Garrett with a water-cooled CHRA, Holsets, IHIs, etc… Where have you been?

Turbocharged engines don’t require more-frequent oil changes, either. Allowing the turbo to cool off is only an issue if you beat the hell out of the thing and then immediately shut the car off. Most people don’t even beat the hell out of the car at all.

With toyota falling apart, GM can again take over the car market. This hatchback will help pick up the pace of sales from all the people leaving toyota.

      sprockkets161 days ago

If you want to say your evidence is based on current tech vs. what is common knowledge then fine, just as in my field of service that today’s heat pumps are much more capable at lower temperatures than what people think they are.

But don’t think for a moment that a turbo has no drawbacks whatsoever. Car and driver tested all the newer vehicles that gloat of having a turbo engine to save on gas, and ALL of them receive poorer mileage than their naturally aspirated ones.

“Car and driver tested all the newer vehicles that gloat of having a turbo engine to save on gas, and ALL of them receive poorer mileage than their naturally aspirated ones.”

Way to completely deflect the conversation. So I guess your strategy is to make a claim, and then when someone contradicts you, you just change the subject? You were talking about oil change intervals, not gas mileage.

All depends on how the turbo is cooled, so there. I made a statement that is generally applies to turbo vehicles, even if they are not oil cooled.

What next, you are going to argue that outputting 260HP from a 2.0l engine has no bearing on the wear and tear of the engine itself vs. a normal 2.0l putting out around 150HP, and that the added stress of forced induction wouldn’t benefit from fully synthetic oil? Why do you think they recommend that oil to those who tow on a regular basis? Those who do find that they have to add less oil to the engine over time.

    27. photo
      sprockkets161 days ago

And to post on this story again what I said, your car has an iron block. Don’t expect an aluminum block to be able to take that kind of boost on a daily basis and last as long.

      Later.

I think they should keep the spots on it…or make it look more like a jersey cow. I don’t know anybody who would buy an Aveo over a Fit,Soul, Versa….. unless this new one is the shizzoo

“All depends on how the turbo is cooled, so there. I made a statement that is generally applies to turbo vehicles, even if they are not oil cooled.”

I’d be shocked if you found a new car with a turbo that wasn’t water-cooled. I can’t say that I know for sure, but I would bet money that every car currently built that has a turbocharger on it uses a water-cooled CHRA. I’m also unsure what you’re talking about when you say it depends on how the turbo is cooled.

Wear and tear of a 260 hp engine isn’t going to be significantly greater than a 150 hp engine if it’s built right. I’d be more worried about manufacturer defects causing catastrophic engine failure than increased engine wear due to higher output. A friend of mine had a 1.8L 4-cylinder with no power that self-destructed on its own. My engine, on the other hand, has seen 20 psi for almost 10 years now. Both of them had iron blocks (not that it matters).

Who the hell doesn’t use synthetic anymore? Other than rotary owners that can’t be bothered to premix?

I already covered your misinformed opinion of aluminum blocks on the other story. That old Honda D-series aluminum block is good to over 400 whp without aftermarket sleeves, block guards, or pins. It’ll take even more once you start adding those other things.

@85ZingoGTR – This is a completely different platform than the old Aveo and it is a half size bigger as the Spark is filling the old Aveo’s slot.

    38. photo
      iluvamcars160 days ago

The Spark is a class smaller than the subcompact class. The new Aveo will do the same thing the current one is. But its on the Gamma platform and was co-developed in North America unlike the current model. Daewoo has made great products since GM took over. Dont judge Daewoo because of the cars we got over ten years ago.
