We just brought you some teaser shots before the official release to whet your appetite for the new Chevy Aveo RS – but now we have the rest of the shots in high resolution. Chevy has officially taken the wraps off of its next hot small hatch.
The car being revealed tonight is not the upcoming production version of the Aveo RS, but rather the current concept version of a possible hopped-up Aveo. Chevy’s current Aveo offering has received harsh criticism for its lacking style, fun factor and competitiveness for the segment. Chevy promises the upcoming Aveo model to be an entirely new car worthy of the Chevy branding.
“We hope the Aveo RS show car will demonstrate that we are as serious about redefining the Aveo and its place in the small-car segment as we were about reinventing the Malibu,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet general manager.
The Aveo RS concept car features uniquely exposed headlamps that are finished in brushed aluminum, 19-inch gun metal finish wheels, upgraded brakes, a rear spoiler and a center mounted exhaust system. Inside the RS you will find a mix of matte and gloss black interior styling – accentuated by metallic and blue accents. GM also carried the blue styling throughout the cabin with custom blue stitching.
Should the Aveo RS make it to production (and we think it should), it will likely be powered by a 138 horsepower 1.4-liter I-4 Ecotec engine – the same engine that will be arriving in the Chevy Cruze. Chevy also plans to build the Aveo in the U.S., making it the only B-class car made on U.S. soil. To pick through your gears, the Aveo RS offers a six-speed manual transmission for spirited driving and the ultimate in driver control.
The production version of the Aveo is scheduled to be built at the Orion Township plant in Michigan beginning in 2011 – bringing back 1,200 much needed jobs to the struggling local economy.

Why is it that comments sometimes disappear after updates? It’s weird reading responses to comments that don’t exist anymore.

Looks pretty production ready to me… can’t really see a whole lot they’d have to dumb down to get it on the road.

the previous article mentioned the projector headlamps wouldn’t make it to production, but i think they add a lot of character and the car would look a lot more generic without them…definitely a keeper feature, imo…

LWA, I don’t remember it saying anything about the projector headlamps in the article. Lots in the comments, though.

@ johnnycanuck, I agree. But they will either not make it or wait until no one wants it to start production.

When you have less palette to work with, its a lot harder to make it look nice.

This better not be another re-badged Daewoo. This better be Chevy’s own original work. I trust the new Chevy with build quality and safe vehicles. I dont trust Daewoo with either.

Every time GM shows us some nice cars which look in production version but we wouldn’t see in showrooms before 2-3 years (even 10 for Volt)!
Can’t their mechanical engineers matchup with their designers!!

wyVern, what are you talking about, 10 years for the Volt? It’s been 3, since the original Concept. The production version has only been seen for 2. There’s a bit of a gap between 2000 and 2007.

Probably oldraven didn’t want his postings to still be here saying that the Equinox has HIDs when it doesn’t.

It has projector lenses on the LTZ and standard bulbs on the LS. Wasn’t that the point I was making? Upscale parts for upscale trims on low cost volume cars. Are you still offering that $1000?

It is a Daewoo. And it’s funny you say that with every good car coming out of GM is a foreign made design from either Holden, Opel or Daewoo (yes, they got good).
Would you prefer the GM made Regal or the rebadged Opel one? Nuff said.

Oh, and btw, the $1000 is betting that this car will never have slotted rotors or HIDs. That Chevy Spark had drilled rotors in the concept (lame), and now has drums in the back (most cars in this class seem to have drums in the back).
The look of the headlamps may make it, but HIDs? Not a chance.

Sprockkets – Lets unwind the clocks back to 1998. Cars.com crash tested the Leganza back when it was sold in the US. The results of the test were so bad that Cars.com returned the dismagled wreck of a disgraced vehicle back to Daewoo basically going up to Daewoo with their crashed car and saying “You f@#$ing kidding me Daewoo?” The Leganza along with the Lanos and Nubira ended up being three of the worst cars in America since then. Opel and Holden are a different story. Opel comes from Europe which has their own safety regulations (EuroNCAP) to make their vehicles safe. In fact although correct me if Im wrong, I’ve been told EuroNCAP has stricter safety regulations than NHTSA. Like I said. Someone correct me if Im wrong. Holden is well known for making high performance models like the Commadore (Pontiac G8) and the Monaro (Pontiac GTO). On top of that, Opel and Holden are said to be well built cars. Suzuki received poor overall quality ratings from JD Power and Associates. Turned out that by really looking into JD Power and isolating each of their models the ones that got the worst quality ratings are the Suzuki Verona (Daewoo Magnus), Suzuki Reno (Daewoo Lacetti hatchback), and Suzuki Forenza (Daewoo Lacetti sedan and Nubira wagon) yet their own models like the Grand Vitara and SX4 has slightly above average ratings. Seeing a pattern here Sprockkets? So yes. A Daewoo piece of $hit. Nuff said.
One other thing. The Aveo is NOT one of Chevys best vehicles. It is arguably noted to be their worst model. The only thing saving that $hitbox is its cheap price tag and the demand for fuel efficient cars. Many people that buy the Aveo are completely unaware its a Korean piece of $hit wearing a chevy badge. So they think its an “American” car.

Not disagreeing with you 85Z, but Car and Driver already drove the Cruze in Europe, and called it a great car. But hey, if it sucks, it will be business as usual with GM

85, the vehicles from Daewoo (designed there, built here, as they all are) have US GM engineers working with them to insure safe cars. The Aveo, as old as it is, is safe because the US engineers were there to assure it met GM criteria at the time it was developed.

You said the Equinox had HIDs, when the upscale model has projector headlamps but they are still halogen. On the Aveo RS, some said it might have HIDs. I said $1000 it won’t have HIDs and of course slotted rotors.
In any case, I miss the 200+ post thread, stupid LLN.

It definitely won’t have slotted rotors. This is hardly unique to GM, though. I said first that upscale trims have upscale parts. You later asked which Chevy’s had them, and then I mistook the Equinox’s LTZ lamps as HID’s, even though the upscale trim had upscale headlights. I made my point, right? I was absolutely right with my first assessment, but you seem to be unable to grasp that. So I was able to admit my mistake, how about you admit that I’ve got a point? I promise not to hold my breath.

sprockkets – The Cruze is a globally designed vehicle involving different parts of GM. But for the most part Holden took the biggest role in the developement. So I expect the Cruze to be a good car.

As far as I knew, the Cruze was primarily developed by GM’s Korean outfit. I’m not saying you’re wrong, this is just the first time I’ve ever heard of Holden designing one of GM’s FWD compacts, and have never heard their name once in articles on the Cruze. Wikipedia says they tested the cars there, but they also said they tested it in Canada and China, which I know had no hand in the cars’ design.

OK, oldraven, you did have a point. And yes, even the Mazda2 had a concept had Z rated skinny tires, but as far as I could tell, no slotted rotors, and had drums in the rear. I wish they kept the projectors though, because every other vehicle save for the tribute has them.
