Chevrolet Camaro demand outpacing supply

06/26/2009, 3:40 PM

By Drew Johnson

The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro looks to be a bona fide hit for General Motors as the Detroit automaker is struggling to keep up with demand. After taking more than 14,000 pre-orders, GM is scrambling to fill the 25,000 dealer orders that have flooded the Camaro’s Oshawa, Ontario plant.

GM has seen it sales slide more than 40 percent this year, but the Chevy Camaro is flying off dealer lots. In fact, demand is so high that most dealers say they won’t see another Camaro for several months. Those that still have the new-age pony car in stock are routinely taking $500 over MSRP.

GM sold 5,463 Camaro last month.

Although the market is now full of rear-wheel drive coupe choices – including the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger – the Camaro seems to be hitting the sweet spot of the segment. Those that want relative fuel economy and sporty driving characteristics can opt for the 29 mpg Camaro V6 while those craving an all-out performance machine can order the V8-powered Camaro SS. The Camaro is also featured in this summer’s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”, which can only help sales.

Based on what I see on the road, Ford is selling a bunch of 2010 Mustangs (all flavors) and Dodge is selling a bunch of Challenger R/Ts. As the 2005 Mustang proved, there’s a huge pent up demand for these cars. Lump in the Hyundai Genesis Coupe and it’s obvious that the Pony Car is back!

Oh no, now we have to hear NMOFGM and 1115’s insight on this…

I like the Camaro, but I wouldn’t buy one due to it just being too impractical. Now the attractive and more practical G8 Coupe… Well, that would have been mine.

Saw an SS pulling out of a Chevy dealership yesterday (presumably a test drive) on my way back home from a meeting. I didn’t bother slowing my 350Z down to let is catch up!! haha. Seriously, it is a very good looking car…a little large looking for my taste (so is the Challenger which is a freakin behemoth of a car)…but I wish GM the best of luck selling these Camaros. It’s good to have something nice to look on the roads instead of all those mundane sedans/economy cars.

im with you jake, the g8 coupe would have been incredible. ironic how pontiac wasnt included in the new pony wars and the rebirth of the firebird canned……more genius from “gm” planners. i pray gm will sell the division to a company that gives a crap about its success. and by the way, the camaro will fizzle after a year and the first month sales figure will be the norm if not lower. gm higher ups are crazy if they think this car will sell 6 figures yearly…

Agree, nice to see some good news. I’m not surprised that it’s about a model with some personality and cojones, instead of some of the meaningless homeopathic soup the old GM is so well know for. Maybe the new GM can learn from this.

Gm could have sold so many more of these if the offered a pontiac firebird/trans am version of this car.
But good to hear that some of their models are popular anyways.

They should not have cancled the model in the first place and spent to money on updates…

HAHAHA! All other cars on the planet PAIL in comperson to this GM and all GMs. Foreign junk and Fords are all garbabge and will all be victims of the NEW GM and the American revoltution. Now it you excuse me I need to fill out forms and see if I can get promoted to a G5 status and distribute condoms for a living.

Buy American! Buy GM! It is your duty!

S2L2SC, you win the prize. Pretty much the whole reason they kept GMC is because the Sierra and Siverado COMBINED sell even more than the F150 and yet by sticking the knife into Pontiac they probably just cost themselves big time.

mayer_ray, you do that pretty well. Is there something you’re not sharing with the rest of the group?

Good going NMOFGM, buy a Camaro, a car based off the Australia Holden Commodore.

Buy Australian! Buy German! Buy the Camaro and support your neighbors to the North, Canada! Because GM can’t build anything themselves domestically otherwise!

“Gm could have sold so many more of these if the offered a pontiac firebird/trans am version of this car.”

It’s called the G8. Funny how so many people haven’t caught on to how GM works nowadays.

as jake knows, one of my co-workers bought one of the first in the area (they dealer wouldn’t let her take possession until after the car was actually used in a parade here in st. louis)…the 500 buck mark-up comment is funny, as one dealer here wanted her to pay 4k over msrp (she went to another dealer and got her car w/o a markup)…i’ve seen it in person and got a brief ride and it’s pretty tight…hers has the RS package, so the extra instrument cluster was in there and i think that looks good…huge wheels, omg…and the car draws a crowd…

someday she’ll let me drive it around the block, but i was going to wait until it got its first ding, so the pressure would be off a bit…unluckily for her, somebody already corner-swiped it in a parking lot…sometimes it just doesn’t seem worth it to spend a lot of cash on a car, considering how inconsiderate most drivers are…they’ll ding your ride up and peel away asap w/o even a note…

GM have to be very careful about increasing the supply to fulfill the demand. If they try to rush the bad quality made CAMARO into the market, they will screw up the big time.

@ sprockkets – The G8 got canceled. As in they are no longer building it – along with the rest of the Pontiac line. Plus the G8 is a four door, not a 2 door…

That said, I would love to buy a new G8 GXP, but won’t be able to afford one for at least another 2 years (when my student loans will be fully paid off) – and by then Pontiac will not be around any more.

Some days I just hate GM for their own stupidity.
