2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS priced from $30,995

If you’re looking to get your hands on a new Chevrolet Camaro SS, it might end up costing less than you expected. The high-performance 2010 model will arrive at dealers with a sticker price of $30,995 — a figure that significantly undercuts the $39,320 Dodge Challenger SRT8. The car is also considerably more affordable than the Mustang GT500, but the Ford is admittedly more powerful and exclusive.

The top-level SS will be motivated by a 6.2L V8. When coupled with the six-speed automatic transmission, the SS will be good for 400 horsepower and 395 lb-ft of torque, while opting for the manual gearbox will net an additional 22 horsepower, for a grand total of 422 horsepower and 408 lb-ft of torque. The V8 powered car will return about 23 mpg on the highway.

Other SS goodies will include four-piston Brembo brakes, a sportier FE3 suspension and Competitive/Sport modes for the car’s StabiliTrak stability control system, including launch control for manual SS models.

Of note, GM claims the Camaro SS lapped Germany’s Nürburgring in 8 minutes 20 seconds. While not as blistering as the Corvette ZR1’s 7:26.4 second lap, it still puts the Camaro in some pretty decent company, such as the E46 BMW M3. However, the Camaro SS’ little brother — the 2008 Cobalt SS — made its way around the Nürburgring in just 8:22.

An RS appearance package will be available on the SS, and will include HID headlamps with an integrated halo ring feature, spoiler, specific tail lamps and 20-inch wheels.

Correcting myself… the V6 Camaro weighs ~3700lbs Camaro SS weighs ~3800lbs… So it’s pretty heavy, just barely lighter than the Challenger…

That it is not much faster around a track than a Cobalt is troubling. Probably slow through the turns, faster down the str8s
Still want one doh.

Everyone expected SS to be considerably less than Challenger SRT8. Interested to know what SS would cost with employee pricing.

muscle cars are meant to be muscle cars so I’m not surprised with their mediocre performance on the Nurburgring. For 31K… this is a bargain of a lifetime. Not to mention, the best looking American muscle car on the market.

That’s a lot of horsepower for $31k!! Nothing can touch that kind of power for the money.

Just think too - That’s $10k less than a Subaru Impreza WRX STi, or Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, with 115 more hp, and much better styling. The only thing you give up is AWD.

The WRX and Evo were supposed to be the best bangs for your buck. Not anymore! The new Camaro shows ‘em how it’s done.

Now I’m just confused about the WRX and Evo lineup. Both vehicles have a huge number of weird, different trims that have “WRX” and “Evo” in them, and then a bunch of other itterations. Thing that probably confuses me the most is just the sheer amount of EVO and WRX models there are- what, this is like the 11th generation Evo or something? It’s ridiculous. Every time they get rid of a pound, they call it a new EVO.

And actually… the G8 still has that kind of power. I wonder though if this will steal some of it’s thunder…

Does anybody know how the G8 has been doing?

Some people might be ticked off by low performance numbers, but im sure you can get SOME weight off the car…..you know, passenger seats, lighter rims…actually Im not sure of anymore but there has to be more lol.

I just love how GM offers a performance car with 20″ wheels lol, they think every American wants bling. IMO the ‘Ring time for this car could be lessened with smaller lighter wheels that are actually built for performance and not flash.

Lau, if someone has the money to put in it, the car can be made a hell of a lot lighter

I’d like to have seen a mid level engine option. Like a 350-360HP V8 or turbo V6 with a mid level price to match.

Well done GM. A well optioned Camaro SS with 422hp for around $35,000. Nothing else in the marketplace offers this much performance, styling, and quality for this entry fee.

The Challenger looks incredible as many have stated here. However, at 40k, it could have had a much better interior. Gotta love the the 420hp Hemi powerplant though. Camaro’s performance and interior look to edge out the Challenger.

Ford’s new Mustang may not compete with Camaro and Challenger customers, since the Mustang is going to look very similar to its current body, which has been around the block a few times. Camaro and Challenger are much more new, exciting, and flavorful.
