It’s been rumored for what seems like several years now, but it appears as though we finally have a concrete date for Chevrolet ’s upcoming Camaro Z28. Unlike previous Camaro models, the Z28 will hail as the range’s top offering.

According to Camaro5.com, the Camaro Z28 will officially begin production on January 1, 2012.

GM sources previously confirmed the Z28′s not-so-well-kept secret existence. Using what information we could dig up, we had our illustrator put together a mock-up Camaro Z28 featuring all of the styling modifications we expect to see.

The aggressive front fascia and unique hood are believed to be almost spot-on, while our latest illustration shows one of several expected wheel options for this top-of-the-line Camaro.

Grunt, grunt, grunt
Remember the 1996 Chevrolet commercial when two young boys were playing a game from their second story window, one boy watching cars drive by with a pair of binoculars, and the other would name the make, model and year from nothing but hearing the exhaust note alone?

Yeah, well this is sort of like that. Sure, we had great spy photos, but to truly appreciate a Z28 you need to hear that V8 rumble and roar.
(More after video)

In the latest spy shots and video the heavy camouflage that has been hiding the details on the new hood and front fascia has been removed, now visible behind light vinyl for the first time. This was done so the car could take to the famous Nürburgring for some hot lap testing at speed. Also added for the first time was the ducktail rear spoiler, as it was previously missing from the prototypes we have spied.

In May, Leftlane reported that Chevrolet would be bringing an updated and improved interior for the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro , but we also reported that the Z28 was definitely approved to go into production featuring a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 – the same engine from the Cadillac CTS -V, meaning output will likely be at least 556 horsepower.

From the latest set of shots, we can see a pretty serious looking wheel/tire/brake package. A set of 20-inch wheels, wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G:2 tires appear to be the order of the day for the Z28. The brakes appear to be the same ones we find on the Cadillac CTS-V .

At the rear we can see a monster set of dual pipes on either side. The exhaust note coming from the Z28 was described by our shooter as “nothing short of unholy!” There are also subtle changes to the rocker panels as well as the lower-rear fascia. While our photos don’t show it, we also noticed a few pieces of body-colored tape across the trunk lid on this prototype. We believe the tape was covering the fastener points for a rear spoiler.

Watch for the 2012 Camaro Z28 to go on sale in the first half of 2012.
