Spied again: 2010 Chevrolet Camaro — in yellow

The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro's color spectrum looks to be shaping up as spy photographers have spotted a Camaro prototype in a third color. Earlier this month spy photographer snapped pictures of black and white prototypes, but today they were able to catch the first images of a yellow Camaro while out testing.

The latest round of spy photos don't reveal too much — other than a new color — but a couple small details can be seen in our previous shots. The front of the car is clearly still under development — especially the headlights — but the rear looks to be taking production form.

Against the car's black paint, the chrome accents that surround the taillights really stands out. The test car's exhaust appears to be diverging from the show car's setup and looks more inline with what we can expect from the road-going version.

A close up of the Camaro's wheel also reveals the car's tire size — 275 40 R 20.

GM officials have yet to say exactly what engines the Camaro will be offered with. However, Lutz referred to the V8 as "big," lending possible credence to the earlier report of an all-new 6.2L V8 would be the top-end motor. GM has already confirmed a V6 model will be offered to do battle with low-end Mustangs, but a turbocharged four-cylinder is still not out of the question. The automaker hopes to sell as many as 100,000 units annually, Lutz said last year.

Overall, the body shape looks very similar to the Camaro Concept. Apparently, GM has added a B-pillar to the Camaro's body structure for added strength. Otherwise, the car is virtually unchanged from the concept, as GM has promised.

Availability

Circle Monday, February 16, 2009 on your calendar as the date the new 2010 Camaros will start heading down the production line at the Oshawa plant in Ontario.

In actuality, this means it will more than likely be mid-March before you'll be able to put your hands on one at a dealership. That puts Camaro availability about a year behind that of its nearest rival, the Dodge Challenger.

A few GM higher ups have stated that the General will start making Camaros in late 2008. That's true, but, a little misleading. Salable, pilot build, Camaros will be the cars rolling down the line in late 2008. This run of cars will be given to engineers, execs and managers to drive for some fast feedback on any last minute changes that might need to be made to the car or the production process. This production run will not be available to the general public to buy.

For those seeking a convertible Camaro, you'll have to wait until Monday, December 7, 2009 — a little bit late for the 2009 convertible season in northern climates. Look for them to start showing up at dealers in late December or early January depending on where you are in the United States.

It's also worth mentioning that these dates are valid as of today. If the Camaro program should hit a snag in its final testing regimens, delays of several days to a few weeks or months are always possible, but unlikely.

GM executives have publicly said Chevy expects to sell over 100,000 Camaros per year with pricing for the V6 model starting in the $20,000 range.

  1. Looks way better in black than white.

  2. I think the car is basically DOA with gas hitting $4/gallon and on the way up. Even with 6 cylinder engine it is hardly a commuter car and it is not priced or envisioned as a weekend only vehicle like Ferrari.
Teenagers will not be able to afford insurance and gas; responsible parents will head for a 4 cylinder fuel efficient car; divorced lounge lizards have to pay alimony, ergo cheaper smaller Chevy or Pontiac. Did I miss any demographic segment? Oh yes, retirees - the rich crowd: will not be able to get into the car and even if they clime in will not be able to get out to sign papers and write a check. Now, marketing segmentation is complete.

  3. Geez autonut, the world today cannot be classified into the limited demographic you describe. This is not the planet 'Vulcan' and for the guys the little head will win out over the big one and for the gals they'll have a leash on any little head they want when they show up in this.

  4. You did hit a lot of demographic market segments, autonut. But you missed the cool people. Without them buying, like you said: DOA!

  5. It looks sweet to me, but yeah I agree this looks a lot better in black. But yeah with the rise in prices it's scary for all of these cars.

  8. This is where I start hating myself for reading these sites. This car is gonna seem soooooo old by the time it comes out to anyone who really cares about cars.I almost wish I could forget I've been seeing this same car for what two years now? without it ever appearing.ButI bet I'll still see one B4 I see a Tesla.

  9. Thats all bullshit, they still sell a ton of Burbans and Hoe's, the V6 will get over 25mpg and people who will buy the 8 wont bitch about gas, i would get one but im in the market for the CTS or G8.

  10. And how about those SPIES get some interior, thats whats everybody wants to see.

  11. this car started to look old 6 months after the concept came out.
the rear end is unfortunate. Looks like an afterhought
the continuation of these cars depends on the sales of the 6 cylinder models.
I believe the Mustang is the standard.
    that leaves the die hards.
GM is more concerned about little niches than creating a great car.

I agree with Elvio, however. I do hope those aren't the production headlamps.

  17. Yeah 56, they better pop those old headlamps back in. If they don't, the aftermarketers will….

  21. Amazingly this car actually looks good in all the colors presented so far, IMO at least. The black one definitely looks a lot more evil, though.

  22. With the Eminent demise of Ford and Chrysler by 2010 at the latest, GM will have this segment to itself. GM keeps pumping out the hits!

  25. I wish those headlights were a production option, I like them better than the giant amorphous blob of white new cars have for headlights. The headlights of the challenger are 1/2 of its appeal for me.

  32. Its not worthy of my Ford Mustang

Comment by Heart64, posted on March11 at 10:34 am
  33. ^A ford mustang isn't worthy to be on any public roads. Its a ford!! I kinda like this camaro and I don't. These retro designs are cool but I believe their popularity will be short lived because its not original, your just copying an old design. The pic of the Camaro with the American flag in the background is funny considering that most of the development for this car took place in Australia, and the car is built in Canada. But thats a good thing, GM really wants this car to be a hit, and Canadian built domestics have a better fit and finish quality and generally more reliable.

  34. I still think this thing looks way more intimidating than a Mustang. I hope to God you don't see these at every stop light like you do the Mustang though. I'm sure those headlamp housings are temporary too.

  35. The top of the line model of this is going to spank the GT500 and Dodge Challenger SRT-8, until that comes out I guess I have a while to wait.

  43. Ricardo you are tooooo funny! I'm thinking I would look purdy in a pale apple green metallic Camaro.
I thought a good test of whether a car was good looking was if it looked great in white. The Camaro is obviously not a good looking car.
Maybes I get a v6 challenger se and make the secerterrys in the pool jealous

  44. Wasn't this Camaro s'posed to be out ages ago? I feel sorry for anyone STILL interested in it. I'm ready for the NEXT generation after this one. Unless I'm alone on this, GM has lost alot of customers by delaying this car. Interest has dwindled, for me anyway.
