OMG, The Lumina was a failure, and Caprice has no performance heritage. They might as well bring back the Bel-Air name. If GM can’t build a half decent FWD Impala(which it is not), they should drop the current Impala and let the very good Malibu take over and use the Impala SS name for the rebadged G8

me thinks the El Camino/ G8 ST/ UTE will be back on the drawing board, maybe a Caballero Denali edition for GMC

@betterthanyou: nah man, the monte is a 2 door, would be like calling this a Camaro sedan instead of Caprice… well maybe not that extreme, but you get the idea.

although brand/ name recognition does help sell a car, i think GM should go with Commodore or just an entirely new name… Commodore is a more aggressive name and thats what the car needs… just nothing alpha-numeric… well unless its SL8R and comes with a Zack Morris phone :l

Ok…. I’m coming out of my long slumber after have not commented on here for about a year… “Bankruptcy2009″ GTFO. The new Ford Taurus SHO will not beat a Pontiac GXP. The facts were already given to you and you still tend to disregard and spew your sh*t out of your ass. The Ford Taurus SHO is heavier than the Pontiac GXP, AND…. IT DOES NOT HAVE 450HP! It has 350HP and it will be lucky if it can do 60 less than 5.2 seconds. Go stand outside a Ford dealer and go and jackoff to a new Fusion or something…

Back on topic… Yeah as much as I’d rather see it be called the Lumina over a Caprice, as long as this car lives on in the U.S. Market GM can call it whatever the hell they want to call it.

The Impala and malibu target different demographics – Impala is more of a budget / fleet vehicle, Malibu is the nicer, upmarket offering. Since both are FWD I really do not see that much overlap with a performance based RWD sedan being added to the mix.

Nice! I’m good with Caprice. People care about other people’s perceptions too much. Is 5-Series an awesome name or an awesome car? Same could be said of a dozen other cars and their names. Does the name make a difference?

Oddly, Chevy’s sedan offerings will start to seriously overlap. Although, both the Malibu and (especially) Impala are good sellers so neither model seems wise to cut. Like someone else wrote, by eliminating the current FWD Impala in favor of the new RWD, the Malibu might absorb most of its sales while the new RWD Impala could pick up some, and I’m sure many more. However, historically GM’s sibling feuding was never productive. Whatever the case, I’m glad that a RWD sedan will remain an option from GM.

And I predict Chevy’s cars will once again be more than just vanilla. Now that GM can focus on it’s brands. Lutz is an asset to GM.

The still-steaming turb otherwise known as Bankruptcy2009 should keep his racist remarks, along with the slanderous intent, off of this site.

blakkar- I used to drive an Impala (police version). Yes, it was kick as.s, but hard to maneuver (wide turning circle, loose steering that was inherent to the vehicle). In other words, it was a land barge with a big motor and some suspension tweaks.

Although the same aside from the forementioned mechanics, the Caprice just withered on the vine. Most anything aside from the police versions were utter junk- and I mean that.

well Nurburgring seems to be the proving grounds, the GXP did it in 8.30.. everyone thought the AWD GT-R would beat the ZR-1 but that still has yet to come to fruition.. dont be so sure of the SHO

the SHO is a great car, but so is the GXP, and between the two, the GXP is the better performer

Not to knock Ford in any way but the GXP is compaired to a 550i BMW the SHO has been compaired to nothing yet that I have seen.
So if the GXP could take on the 550i BMW I’m sure there is a good chance it would take out the SHO.
What ever happens it’s a great car and looks good on the road. I saw 3 on the way to the office today red,black, and silver all looked great.
What ever GM does make it a Chevy a Buick just keep building it.

Andy THe fact is The Taurus will outrun the GXP in a True Crosscountry Race there is NO WAY in HELL a RWD Car like the Pontiac GXP (Soon to be Defunct-Wonder Why) will Compete in the Twisties and in ALL Weather conditions with a AWD (Large) Supercar like the Ford Motors SHO. SHO Will KIll the G8 GXP in a Landslide easily!

Bankruptcy gives you guys FACTS and your still in denial. Its fine to be in love with GOVERNMENT MOTORS but if your presented with facts then just accept them and move on. The g8’s resale value is ****. With the redesign of the new taurus and the horsepower to back it. MARK MY WORDS it will be the best seliing full size sedan for 2010. Are you guys keeping in mind the New Taurus is a FULLSIZE sedan. It still smokes the g8 in the quartermile. There Making the G8 a Caprice because word around town is GM wants to make a bid at GOVERNMENT VEHICLES. Thats right COP CARS! haha kind of funny being the GOVERNMENT owns a good portion of them.

I’m still amazed ford hasn’t put just a little bit more money Ford Australia’s way. There seems to be enough interest to work on a LHD model.

The F6 and GTt are equally good rear wheel drive sedans, the F6 particularly beats the equivalent HSV models on the track.
