Chevrolet ’s racing division has officially unveiled its latest creation, the Corvette C6.R. Sponsored by Compuware and piloted by Johnny O’Connell, Jan Magnussen, and Antonio Garcia, the Chevrolet Corvette C6.R will campaign in the 2010 American Le Mans Series.
Set to compete in the GT class (formerly GT2), the Corvette C6.R will battle entrants from the likes of Porsche , Ferrari , BMW , Jaguar and Ford . The Corvette C6.R will make its racing debut on March 20 at the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. The Sebring event is the first of the 2010 ALMS season.

Although most modern racecars have very little in common with their road-going counterparts, the C6.R’s engine is actually based on a new production motor. The latest C6.R ditches its typical 7.0L and 6.0L V8s in favor of a new 5.5L V8.

No technical details have been released on the new engine as of yet, but we fully expect the new mill to be just as powerful as its larger cousins. A version of the 5.5L motor will eventually surface in a production Corvette, but as to when is anyone’s guess.
