2009 Chevrolet Corvette GT1 Championship Edition

02/19/2009, 5:26 PM

By Drew Johnson

Although General Motors is killing off its performance division, now seems like one of the best times to be a Corvette fan. Following on the heels of the Corvette ZR1 and the Competition Sport, Chevrolet has announced the Corvette GT1 Championship Edition.

Available on coupe, convertible and Z06 models, the GT1 package is intended to commemorate the final year of the Corvette Racing C6.R team’s participation in the GT1 class of ALMS and Le Mans.

The package will be available in a yellow base color with black accents, or with a black base paint and yellow accents. Yellow cars will receive black headlights with body colored door handles and a unique carbon fiber engine cover for both models. The Corvette Racing team’s ‘Jake’ logo will be used throughout the car, and the team’s victories will be displayed on the lower portion of the Corvette’s door.

Inside, the special ‘Vette will feature GT1 embroidery on the seats and center armrest, with cars equipped with black leather sporting yellow accent stitching.

The GT1 won’t feature any changes underhood, although coupe and convertible models will come equipped with the Z51 and performance exhaust packages.

Only 600 examples of the Corvette GT1 will be produced — 100 of each model in each color — with the package tacking on $7,840 to the base price of the C6 Corvette. Sales are slated to begin this spring.

Wow not bad! But why make this? Beacuz really, while J.G. Wentworth customers are going: “Its my money and i need it now!” While the American auto industries are going: “Its your money and I need now!”

I’m with ring taxi. It’ll be like a Lotus, completely stripped out and over-priced.

The bankrupt company should think about survival. GM clearly not. They should sell Corvette franchise to a company that can make money on it. Selling few thousands cars at below market value probably is not a road to recovery. Don’t get me wrong – I love this car, but it should not be produced by failed conglomerate.

One of my biggest qualms with the styling of the Corvette is the body color headlamps, this car is much better but not worth the bread.

wow, yet another special edtion of the vette. Why can’t they just spend the money and improve the interior and leave the stickers off… Then my friends we’ll have a special Vette.

I agree with you 100% GMmalvado,

GM’s is cutting a ridiculous amount of jobs, scrapping numerous brands of cars and yet, they still keep producing new forms of the C6. To me (and I know I will get flak for this) this looks like a C6 with a $2 dollar paint job. Please GM, stop overkilling this all……

Make a better G8…450 horsepower version maybe……

Who cares for show car cars like this when you can get a go go car like the Nissan GT-R Spec V Skyline that will blow the doors off this car

I agree with Mutant. A 600HP Vette makes more sense than stickers.

I’m generally not a fan of special edition Corvettes that don’t offer more performance, but out of all the special editions, I like this one the best. This car will fetch some big coin in 20-30 years, much like the ‘78 Pace Car does today, and the ‘82 Collector’s Edition, both of which were nothing more than limited edition paint and sticker Corvettes.

I can’t wait for them to start kicking Porsche’s butt in GT2 soon.

The C6R is supposed to beat the 911 GT3 RSR because the 911 is a class down from the C6R. But you probably knew that anyway and you’re just sour graping because you’ve seen the video where the 911 GT2 embarrassed the ZO6.

And this is why the GM haters need to get a new hobby.

“I love this car, but it should not be produced by failed conglomerate.”

This is GM’s car, their flagship. Like it or not, they’re exactly who should be building it, and they should get every scrap of recognition for giving the world an automotive icon. If GM gave away every car that it does right, how exactly would they have any hope for survival?

There are so many people who think they could be CEOs of auto giants, and it couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Come on everybody, I know it’s hard, but say it with me. “GM did a good job with the Corvette.” The truth will set you free.

Old Raven, GM did an EXCELLENT job with the Corvette ever since the beginning. The old ones from the ’50s and ’60s are my favorites, but the new ones are incredible cars, too. I’m not a GM fan, but I respect them and the Corvette with all my heart and soul.

Ring Taxi who cares if the $194,000 GT2 beats a $74,775 z06? The zo6 is priced alot closer to the $76,300 carrera, but completely dominates it. And don’t forget, the $106,520 ZR1 dominates over every porsche including the $440,000 Carerra GT.

I think that Z06ified was refering to the Corvette teams plan to run in GT2 instead of GT1 (except for Sebring and LeMans) this year. I think that the Corvette team wants more competition since no one really shows up for GT1 any more. So the 09 version of the C6R will go head to head against the GT3 RSR. It will be interesting to see how it turns out…
