2010 Chevrolet Equinox [spied again]

April7

Spies have again snapped photos of the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox undergoing testing. The Equinox will share a platform with the new GMC Terrain, which was photographed for the first time ever a few days ago.

The camouflage stumped our spies earlier this year, but they since properly identified the SUV. Code-named GMT172, these pictures show Chevy's latest crossover project undergoing testing. Production starts in March of 2009 at the CAMI facility, with sales following shortly afterwards.

When spy photos of the 2010 Cadillac BRX arrived on our doorstep a few months ago, we wondered why the vehicle's overall shape looked so different from the Provoq Concept that was supposed to preview it. As it turned out, there was a good reason — it wasn't the BRX at all. Rather, the photos showed the new Equinox.

The BRX has since been spied in testing, and it looks considerably different, not to mention rides on a separate platform!

  1. I like the look of the current Equinox. I'm suprised it doesn't sell better. It's a much nicer looking vehicle than the CR-V or RAV4 for the same price. The only thing that sucks about it is the Chinese built old school 3.4L V-6, which should have been retired about 15 years ago.

  4. I know a lady who leases an Equinox. She has one word for it- cheap. Among her quibbles (and she's not short) is that the door sill is so high she can't rest her elbow out the window. Minor stuff, I know, but ergonomics has never been GM's strong suit.

  5. Agreed with both ZO6ified and 400horseSS, GM really needs to cut the 3.4L SFI V6, The Equinox Sport comes with AWD and the 3.6L with 252hp which is a lot better for it. However yeah it can cost 29 to over 30grand as well.

I also looked into leasing one back in 06 and the lease rates for it weren't that appealing to me, however it itself really wasn't either.

  6. @SS4LIFE,

I'd imagine that the Equinox will share its drivetrains with the Malibu, Vue, etc and basically be the 2.4L Ecotec and the 3.6L V6

  7. Johnnycannuck- I sat in an Equinox. It's not all that cheap or bad, but has fallen behind compared to most everything else in quality. Alright car, drives nice, but it's understated in every function. Also, I'm not sure about the belt line/ window sill, but then again I'm most likely taller than her.

lp640- So, you ride and handle bricks now?

Frylock350- It uses SOME of the same/similar mechanics, but is on it's own unibody architecture, GM THETA, same as the Saturn VUE. Although it regards it as a crossover, it doesn't share a platform with a sedan at the moment, and probably won't until the THETA architecture is extinct.

ZO6ified- True about the 3.4 liter. Equinox is a fair amount bigger than RAV4/CR-V, maybe that's why it doesn't compete all that well with them. I think those two have surpassed the Equinox in price though. Base price for CR-V is a little lower, but you can rack up the prices quickly, and RAV4 starts a little higher, and ends just a few grand short of Equinox.

  8. jayjc08 and johnny, I sat first and last time in Equinox at NYC car expo. It was the second day of the show and the directional signal was broken. Interior did look cheap and it was so much third world country compare to 5-6 year old CR-V that it was instant turnoff. Of course if the only cars you enter Chevy, then you would not notice those minor details and I think they are minor, mechanicals maybe perfect.

  9. My wife has an '05 Equinox. True the 3.4 is an old engine, but it's reliable as hell. I see nothing wrong with it, it goes about its business without fuss or struggle, and I don't have to worry about timing belts snapping on me. Can you think of other "old" engines that have been around this long? They use the 3.4 to keep the costs down, it has been tried and proven.

Remember the 225 slant 6 from Chrysler? The most durable engine ever built.

  10. I have an equinox, I love my equinox. I believe I will buy a new one as well when the time comes. It has a smooth ride. It's a 2008 and does not look cheap inside at all. I love it.

  11. I own an 07' Equinox. I traded my trusty old S10 for it, because my wife and I needed a more family friendly vehicle. To be honest, I would have never given this vehicle a second look until the salesperson brought it to my attention. We originally were going to chose between a few different used vehicles to include a Lexus RX 350, a Buick Rendezvous and a Chevy Trailblazer. But, I knew as soon as I sat in the driver seat of the Equinox 2LT that it was worth considering. I took it on a test drive both in town and on the highway and I was thoroughly impressed. Both the accelerator and steering were very responsive and the ride was surprisingly smoothe. The interior was profoundly roomier than the exterior leads you to believe. My Dad is 6'6" and he has plently of leg room in the back seat. Also, we're able to fit my 70 lb dog's kennel and our cat's carrier in the back with a large rolling suitcase. The folding rear seat makes it an awesome little cargo hauler. The cockpit is intuitive as well as aesthetically pleasing. There are tons of storage features to serve the pack-rat in me. The 3.4L V6 may not offer fantastic performance, but it's very durable and easy to work on. And, the mileage isn't all that bad for a vehicle of this size. I would love to see a hybrid model, though. All in all it's a pleasure to drive. In fact, I liked it so much that I was considering letting my wife have it for herself while I got a new Sport model when they came out. However, when my dealer got its first one on the lot, I took one look at the price tag and changed my mind. I think Chevy played the wrong note on that one. They should have kept it simple by just offering the new engine instead of slapping a bloated price tag on a Sport model. It did little to nothing to boost sales. I genuinely enjoy the styling of the vehicle so, I hope that Chevy doesn't shoot itself in the foot with this re-design. I'm really hoping to see more engine offerings, more innovative storage and a Sport that lives up to its price.
