I like American cars in general, but the Impala is a dull, uninspired appliance. For the sake of Chevy, they need to drop the overweight FWD Impala and go with a rebadged G8. GM's pushrod engines absolutely suck.

I mean, come on, 233 HP from a 3.9L? Gimme a break. The impala is a dated piece of crap. I say that after spending a week with one as a rental.

Well its good that it is making a hasty retreat from the market place as even the Regular Taurus (263 HP) with ((AWD)) would make quick work out of the so called SS Impala much less the Twin Force V-6 Taurus SHO

1115 guy is the same person as American_Cars_Crap. There are two or three of these anti-American import snobs on here that switch screen names regularly to make it "seem" like there are more people in line with their twisted way of thinking. The fact is, the minority is always by far the most vocal.

Dammit, Chevy! You were supposed to get rid of the HHR SS!

The Impala SS isn't so bad compared to that gussied up little hatch. "Americanese" is something I've heard it called, there's nothing muscle about it.

Bimmer, cost of retooling. 4 speed is very smooth and why count gears that you not shifting yourself?

jake, that's why god created ford and chevy. To each its own. I own Hondas and Vibe GT.

I don't see why GM can't just rebadge the Pontiac G8 as the new Impala and offer turbo V6 and turbo four-cylinder engines to meet their MPG requirements and still offer us a full size sedan that goes in volume sales. It sure would be nice if they offered a V8 and Tremec 6-speed on an SS version.

That would constitute an "Impala" for me.

As an aside, I don't like the car but I've really liked the styling of the current Malibu. Some design cues should be taken from it.

@Leftwing -
Don Brown at the entrance to the Hill! That's a shame - but they kind of would be one I'd figure do that - that or the Dean Team and Suntrup if they had a Chevy dealer (the two worst dealer chains in the STL, maybe the nation). ELCO is usually alright, so is Bommarito and Jim Trenary/Jim Butler.

@Borat - I'd still take the Lucerne over the Impala for a large GM sedan especially now that the standard engine is the 3.9L

Way to go with 4-speed auto! It reminds me of Neon that come with 3-speed slushbox, when everyone switched to four and five-speed units. If Malibu uses 6-speed auto, why not Impala?

Johnny, I love some RWD cars (BMW), but front wheel drive Impala was always a better car then RWD Impala/Caprice. I drove both version plenty to like the later offering. 90's ugly duckling was so heavy that even 5.7L (350 CID) motor could motivate performance out of it and handling wasn't as good as FWD. I realize that driving is a personal as subjective gets, but FWD Impala is the best US made car in my opinion, especially with 3.9L motor.

Well, the current Impala is GM's most profitable sedan line not wearing a Cadillac badge. The Impala regularly is at the top of the sales charts just below the Camry and Accord. People do like cars with power and space, regardless of the FWD aspect. This is why the new Taurus is going to shake up the market.

GM should make a real Impala SS. Big-block and RWD.

I don't like the name "the Cobalt SS," either. "Cobalt z28" would be more appropriate

"The Impala SS dates back to 1961, with the 1994-96 cars still enjoying a loyal following." The '96 is a classic, no doubt.

johnnycanuck: "...And that they will never be fooled by a front-drive impersonator." STRAIGHT GOSPEL!!

orangecones: "The mid-90s Caprice/Impala SS is pretty much the only modern SS in my book." YEP.

" its just a huge floaty and dull sedan with only aspirations of being sporty." It's a crime to call something V6 and FWD an Impala.

The mid-90s Caprice/Impala SS is pretty much the only modern SS in my book. Starting with the last gen and especially current gen, Impala is not what it used to be, its just a huge floaty and dull sedan with only aspirations of being sporty. And whats the deal with the displacement vs hp ratings on these engines, they make 57 hp/L on the V8 and 59 hp/L on the V6. Truly the awesome job guys.

The fact that the Caprice based Impala SS from the nineties is still such a sought after collector car today even though it was clothed in some of the most awkward sheetmetal ever to leave a stamping plant shows just how starved a certain segment of the market is when it comes to this kind of car. And that they will never be fooled by a front drive impersonator.

They still made the SS? Could have fooled me. If they stopped making them for 2007 I have a feeling no one would have noticed. The LTZ was always the better choice in the lineup anyway - the 3.9L is really pretty sweet.

I doubt they would call a G8 version the Impala anyway - I'd think more the lines of Caprice SS or Camaro Sedan SS

Take out the "Impala SS" part of the title, now you've got something.

303hp from a 5.3L V8, wow very impressive. Those GM engineers truly earned their Devry diplomas. This being the SS model, does it mean it will suddenly stop and not be able to start it like with the new Camaro SS?? I guess SS means "suddenly stops"

I hope this does mean that the G8/Commodore would take that spot. GM needs to make sales and get back development money on selling product more than absent-mindedly focusing strictly on fuel-efficiency. F/econ is an important goal but bringing home the money is more so right now.

Make that cars that sell. If it is a RWD sedan for under $40K then build it and stop making excuses.
