    By Drew Johnson

After an earlier, fleeting glimpse, our spy photographers have nabbed the best images yet of the upcoming 2012 Chevrolet Malibu. Best of all, the prototype caught testing today was wearing almost no camouflage!

Judging from the latest spy shots, the 2012 Malibu will retain many of the design cues of the current car, although it will be moving to GM’s Epsilon II platform. The front headlights appear to have a jeweled look, not unlike the treatment seen on the 2011 Buick Regal. Chevrolet’s signature cross-bar grille, however, remains front and center.

The rear of the Malibu also appears to be in line for an update, with the taillights receiving a Camaro-like treatment.

It’s been reported that the Malibu will shrink a bit in its next iteration, but the extent of that downsizing remains unknown. The current Malibu rides on a 112.3 inch wheelbase, but it remains to be seen if the Malibu will adopt the Buick LaCrosse’s 111.7 inch wheelbase or the Regal’s shorter 107.8 inch wheelbase, although the former seems more likely. Both the LaCrosse and Regal ride on the Epsilon II platform.

With a 2012 model year designation, expect the new Malibu to bow at the beginning of the next auto show season – in either Los Angeles or Detroit – with an on sale date sometime in 2011.

What exactly is so bold about it Realist? About the only thing you might want to give them credit for is finally realizing that evolutionary styling can be carried through a model other than the Corvette.

By the way, are we going to get another lame-assed attempt at a hybrid or have they just given up thanks to the Volt?

Actually….It kinda still looks the same.

I would say the smaller wheelbase is correct. The new Impala will be on the longer LaCrosse WB, if not longer yet.

“GM plans to have 14 hybrid models by 2012, a spokeswoman said today.”

      Read more: http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN2311419620090624?sp=true (June 23, 2009)

The big question is, what will these 14 hybrids that GM is promising be? The General currently has five in its stable, not including the discontinued Malibu Hybrid and the soon-to-be-sold-to-Penske Saturn division. GM has promised that a better Malibu Hybrid and the Volt are coming, but that only brings the tally to seven. We had a look through GM’s product portfolio, and here’s what we’ve come up with:

As noted above, GM has five hybrids in its line-up already, the Chevrolet Silverado and Tahoe and their twins the GMC Sierra and Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade, all of which are essentially the same vehicle underneath. While the Chevrolet Malibu mild hybrid is out for 2010, it’ll be back and the Chevrolet Volt is promised by the end of next year. That’s where the certainty ends.

From there, GM needs seven more hybrids to meet its 14-hybrid goal. GM has developed a two-mode hybrid system that was supposed to debut on the now-defunct Saturn Vue. GM did not, however, include the hybrid technology in the sale, so it’s still waiting in the wings and it will most likely show up on the Vue’s platform mates, the Chevrolet Equinox and the GMC Terrain. That’s nine. Meanwhile, rumor has it that an as-of-yet-unnamed Buick crossover to be built on the Theta platform will be the first vehicle to get the Vue’s two-mode system, so that could make ten. With the new Cadillac SRX now on the Theta Premium platform, it could also be a candidate. That could be eleven.

With the Malibu Hybrid promised to return next year with a better hybrid powertrain — hopefully the same two-mode system that would be found in the Thetas, but more likely an improved BAS mild hybrid system — it’s likely its platform-mates could benefit as well. With yesterday’s announcement of a four-cylinder version of the new Buick LaCrosse, there’s a good chance that a LaCrosse Hybrid could be in the works as well. There’s twelve.

Here’s where it gets really murky. GM needs as few as two and as many as four more hybrids to meet its goal, and it’s running out of ready-to-be-converted models. One possibility is that GM could try to downsize the four-cylinder engine and two-mode hybrid system to fit under the hood of the new Chevrolet Cruze, which would open the door to a hybrid version of the upcoming Chevrolet Orlando MPV and the rumored Buick version of the Cruze. With the Orlando on hold and the Buick just a rumor, though, the Cruze is the only real possibility by 2012, and even that depends entirely on whether or not GM could make the packaging work.

Another possibility would be a proliferation of GM’s new Voltec technology, which will debut in the Chevrolet Volt.

One platform that GM hasn’t hybridized yet is the popular Lambda platform, consisting of the Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia, and Buick Enclave. If GM can get the now-defunct Saturn Vue’s two-mode hybrid system out the door, the Lambdas with their high-feature V-6s are prime candidates, opening up three more potential hybrids to meet The General’s goal. The Lambdas are slightly less likely than the Thetas since their platform hasn’t been adapted for a hybrid drivetrain yet, but being larger vehicles, there should be room to do it. The big question is how long it will take to engineer the conversion to production standards.

A final, remote possibility is that GM could try to shrink its two-mode hybrid system from its trucks to fit into the RWD Cadillac CTS, provided there’s enough room in the car to make it happen.

I mean, does GM TRY to design boring, bland, and often flat-out ugly cars? They do not cease to amaze me at their consistency of designing cars I would never in my right mind consider purchasing. The current Malibu, in most mid-size sedan comparison tests, always scores at the bottom, and I believe this model will continue to disappoint!

I like it, and a 4 year refresh cycle is impressive. The Epsilon II chassis has proven to be very good in the various duties it has been used in. I had a Malibu LTZ 2.4L 4 as a rental car back in 2008 and I was very impressed across the board. I wish it had more go-go but MPG was excellent. The people with me on the business trip kept asking, “it’s a Chevy???”

@PrudentPrius – I guess you don’t like Consumer Reports than you – they recommend the Malibu, have since the redesign came out. They rate above cars like the Honda Accord. I find irony that someone with a screen name that has Prius in it gritches about a car being boring!

@ outdoorplaces: YOU FOOL! Do you realize the 3rd Gen Prius has the lowest drag-coefficient of any mass-produced car in the world (so that excludes Lamborghinis, got it?). That’s why the Prius looks the way it does. I’m biased here, but I doubt anyone will argue that the 3rd Gen Prius is the best-looking of the “dedicated” hybrid cars out there. All of this is besides the point.

YOU READ CONSUMER REPORTS? HAH! No I don’t read that piece of trash, outdated, rag. I do read Motor Trend, Road & Track, etc. – and even as recently as this month, the Malibu scored like 6 out of 7 in MT’s 4-cylinder midsize sedan review. (The Ford Fusion scored 2nd place).

Some of you can’t wait to just trash GM as soon as you can.

I think it is done well. The rear lights are interesting I will admit, but distinct.

So Prius, if it has a low drag-coefficient, than it is not bland? So your Prius is not bland? LOLOL., ok!

Looks worse stylewise than what they have now, but if it has more trunk space and rear leg room and a fold down center armrest in the back seat and factory LCD nav screen and better quality door panels and center stack, it will be an improvement.

American car makers fail in grasping this concept: good looking car sells even it is a piece of crap. This car looks like a piece of crap, and on top of that, you see a John Deere or Briggs and Stattron Lawnmower engine under the hood. Thus the saga of poor sale will continue

since the car has dual muffler already, why not make the muffler more bigger and more aggressive looking or put a nice chrome tip on it. Accord and Camry makes the dual muffler looks much more aggressive for a sedan. Small details like this really attracts buyer because first impression is the look and most people will buy it base on first impression alone

Okay Prudent Prius. Chill out. Good God Almighty. You really think your 3rd gen Prius is pretty of “dedicated hybrids?” Honestly, if I had to…..ABSOLUTELY had to, I’d take the Insight or the CR-Z (considering I’m not a Toyota or Honda fan at all). So it doesn’t have the best “drag-coefficient” or the best fuel economy. It ISN’T the Prius and isn’t as bland or boring either.

      For starters:

The Malibu is on the LWB Epsilon II platform; yes, the car pictured is on the same wheelbase as the Lacrosse.

The Lambdas can already accept the hybrid powertrain; they were originally designed to even take a V8.

The two-mode system will be found in the next generation CTS and ATS/alpha platform RWD vehicles. The system was originally designed with BMW, Mercedes and Chrysler for RWD; the 2nd generation, lighter and smaller, makes it available to RWD cars and FWD cars.

      DB9;-)

      secondcts105 days ago

This is a good-looking update of a good-looking car. The current Malibu has been rightly criticized for being a tad narrow, but no one in the auto press – who will actually put their name to an article – dislikes the current edition. The new platform will result in a wider car; if the driving dynamics are sharpened up to match the Fusion, then it will win the entry mid-size crown.

The 2012 Malibu uses the same 107.8 inch wheelbase as the 2011 Buick Regal. This makes perfect sense and will make for a great handling sedan.

If GM has any sense, the Buick LaCrosse’s 111.7 inch wheelbase (and FWD) will be featured on the next Impala.
