The Chevrolet Malibu is all new for 2008 and is charged with the task of taking on the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord in the highly-competitive mid-sized sedan segment.
The design of the Malibu was inspired by more expensive European models -- featuring a thick C-pillar and high belt line -- and hints at the future styling of Chevrolet products.
The interior of the Malibu takes styling cues from classic Corvettes of the past and has a unique twin-cowl dash design. The Malibu's overall fit and finish is arguable the best ever to roll off a Chevrolet production line.
The Malibu is available in four different trim levels: LS, LT, and LTZ. Base model cars are powered by a 169 horsepower 2.4L VVT four-cylinder engine -- mated to a four-speed automatic transmission -- with the LTZ trim level using a 3.6L V6 -- rated at 252 horsepower -- mated to a six-speed auto with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. The 3.6L is optional on LT models.
Of note, in mid-2008, Chevrolet will offer a four-cylinder version of the LTZ that also uses a six-speed automatic transmission.
No matter the trim level, the Malibu offers an impressive list of standard features that includes traction control, a tire pressure monitoring system and head-curtain side-impact air bags for both rows of seats.
