I was always curious why GM didnt let this car really become a performance platform.
RWD and the Vortech 5.3, or maybe even the 6.0 would have been a pretty nice combination and would have made it a little more worthy of the sporting name.

There seem to be buyers in North America for saloon cars with 2 doors that are marketed as coupes (this ugly duckling, Honda’s Accord, BMW’s 3-series, Audi’s A5, Toyota’s Tercel). In Europe only BMW have had success with this, presumably because of their brand’s strong sporting credentials.

Actually the newer V8 powered Montes were pretty fast and very much a sleeper. They have a 0-60 time of 5.6 seconds which isn’t bad for a FFD vehicle. Some people hate the looks, others like it, its just personal taste. I really don’t see the point though in bringing it back if they are already making the Camaro and GTO. That would be a waste of time to make a 3rd 2door sports car.

Let me add something here that was left out on my first post. A 2006-2007 Monte Carlo SS is ONLY useful in a straight line, simply put. LamboZ, you are absolutely correct regarding driving in the twisties. Unless you plan on getting well-acquainted with a guardrail, then the Monte should NOT be driven hard on a road course or twisty road. And referring to getting your ass handed to you – I mean STOCK FOR STOCK. Modified is a whole different ball game. (And yes, I have driven a Mini Cooper S, I enjoyed it very much.) I should have been clearer and said:

“If you want a spacious, powerful, DAILY DRIVER coupe that hauls a lot of people and a lot of stuff, then the Monte Carlo offered consumers a viable choice.”

Trust me, I was not issuing a challenge. But I have driven a 2006 Monte SS and it had good power. Traction-challenged? Yes, but only if you attempt to floor it from a stop. If a bonehead driver did this, then yes, he would be spinning for weeks.

I agree that the “Stock” needs to be put back in “Stock Car” racing.

I also think it should return to its bootlegging roots. A race series where the drivers are required to be (and remain) drunk would be hugely popular. Also, it would be a grim reminder of the dangers of driving while intoxicated.

And it’ll be hard to get my ass handed to me by an 06 or 07 Monte Carlo SS, it’ll be stuck back at the stoplight with its tires spinning, that’s what you get with FWD + V8! Not to mention I could care less if some bonehead driving a V8 powered, outdated, FWD, unattractive (looks are subjective I know), old fashioned domestic coupe beats me at the drag strip, try taking that Monte Carlo SS to oh I don’t know, a twisty road, and tell me how it feels to get your ass handed to you by something like a Mini Cooper S

I must be one of the few who will miss the nameplate. Not everyone who drives one of these cars flies a confederate flag from a double-wide trailer. I agree that naming a 2-door, FWD version of the Lumina “Monte Carlo” in 1995 was a bad idea. I also agree that the Monte Carlo name deserves a rwd platform.

On the other hand, calling the car a POS may be pushing it. I owned a 1996 Monte for 10 years, and experienced NO mechanical problems. I challenge any make to match that repair record. And because I did not expect the car to perform like a racecar, I was completely happy. Listen, if you understand going in that the vehicle is not intended to be sporty – that it was essentially a 2 door family car – you would probably be as satisfied as I was.

Calling Monte Carlo a “shitbox” or “POS” is fun, isn’t it? But that’s just an opinion, and everyone’s got one. But when you get your ass handed to you by a 2006 or 2007 Monte Carlo SS, who will be laughing then?

anybody remember a few months back when #1gmfan stated monte carlos were just flying out the door?? i almost said something then, but todays news took care of it for me. it was a terrible seller with no meaningful updates at all. the new model looks no different than the last lumina coupe. good riddance.

Boxster, not exactly true. Camaro, Challenger are two highly anticipated coupes. The Mustang sells very well. 3 series coupes sell well. What nobody wants is an underperforming, FWD car that is hardly nice to look at. The Monte Carlo is just a bad example of a mid size coupe. So was the Solara.

Someday we are going to have to change all that. “Modified Stock” needs to come back if Detroit is going to have a strong engine for improvement in their cars. If you can build something that can win a race more people will notice, and more will buy it for more than just the engine. That’s what worked before, just have to add quality to the mix.

As for the interiors, they need to stop hiring Tupperware people, and get some serious car interior and even furniture designers in the mix. the designs seem to be good, but the parts just are working out. Parts that fit, construction that last, and designs that look good now and fifty or more years later.

Also when is Detroit going to be more adventuresome and give us some AWD cars? Not just SUVs and CUVs.

After killing the G-body “Monte C”, That car just suffered one poor excuse after another. It was okay when they called it “Lumina” I wasn’t upset, but then they… ruined my image of the Monte Carlo… FR, V8, Bad-ass, Hawaiian police car.

If the Monte Carlo is a coupe version of the Zeta Impala, which should be a bit larger than the Camaro, then I will be happy. If they never built it, I will be happy. If it yet another unworthy POS, I’ll go buy a Chery.

The new monte carlo sucks anyway then they just made it uglier by adding an impala front end to it. I still think the new impala is a pos too. Im not even an import guy but I can see that the altima and maxima are better looking cars. SR shut up its just a commercial. I know a bunch of black guys who love nascar.

Plus, I don’t think anyone would complain about too much overlap if the vehicles were good.

Assuming the Zeta platform is as flexible as Lutz would have us believe, I don’t really think there should be a problem building a wide variety of similar models. That’s pretty much what seems to be happening in Germany right now. Mercedes, VW/Audi, and to some degree BMW (X6?) are filling niches as fast as they can find them.

So yeah, there’s probably a market for a “Gentleman’s Camaro.”
