Chevrolet Orlando makes Detroit appearance, U.S. sales given green light

01/12/2009, 9:01 AM

By Drew Johnson

The Chevrolet Orlando concept car made a surprising appearance at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit – and GM says that it’s headed to dealers in production form for the 2011 model year. Expected as a more conventional replacement for the HHR, the Orlando was first unveiled at the Paris Motor Show last fall.

Based on the same Delta platform as the Chevrolet Cruze and Volt, the Orlando will be motivated by a range of gas and diesel powerplants, displacing between 1.6L and 2.0L. The Orlando’s top engine offering will be a 2.0L diesel unit, putting out 150 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. Power will be sent through five-speed manual and automatic transmissions.

Although the Orlando will initially be offered exclusively with front-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive model will join the lineup later on.

With a 2,760 mm wheelbase (108.7 inches), the Orlando features three rows of seats. The interior appears to be quite similar to the Cruze’s interior, with a waterfall center stack and switchgear out of GM’s current models.

The Orlando that showed up in Detroit appears to be pretty much the same concept car it was in Paris.

Don’t they have enough trucks and crossovers already?

I’m glad it’s coming, but I have to admit that the BS game they played before by saying that this vehicle and the Spark/Beat are not US crash reg compliant pisses me off. That was a flat out lie.

So the team that designed the Aztec is still alive! What an ugly vehicle.

What happened to back end? Did someone back into a wall at speed?

Note the muscular flared wheel openings and how well they integrate with the snout. Makes the vehicle look much more muscular and far larger than it really is.

More fakery from GM.

This is where the $billions are going?

im going to be sad to see the panel HHR go too.. maybe not the regular one but that is a great commercial vehicle that they ought to keep in their stable and position in their commercial lineup. this is just a cruze wagon.

GM should dump that stupid looking HHR and replace it with this. This is what that homely Dodge Caliber should have come out looking like. Very snazzy looking interior too. This is what they need to survive their downward plunge.

Why even use the word “truck”? Does it look like a truck? Crossover, yeah.
But they don’t have enough small crossovers.
I think this looks great.

I Like it, especially the idea of an AWD diesel. Having said that, I’ll believe it when I see it – a passanger diesel powered car made by GM sold in North America. They will probably come up with another lame excuse not to bring the diesel here, just like with the Astra (while VW and Mercedes continues to happily sell diesels here as they have pretty much forever). Hey Bob, if diesels won’t sell in North America, why has BMW just started bringing their rattler here? What do they know that you don’t?
